Losing Internet Connection

R

Raphael

I just set up XP. I have a cable modem (RCA) connected
via ethernet cable. Every few seconds, the connection
between the computer and the modem just drops (I get the
message LAN Cable Unplugged - with the red "X" through the
Network Connection Icon). The cable is fine - the modem
is fine - the computer tells me the ethernet card is fine -
but for some reason, the IP addresses just disappear. My
cable company tells me that the TCP/IP settings are
correct - set to automatically identify IP address. When
we ran ipconfig/all, if you happen run it when the
connection is up, it shows IP addresses. If you run it
when the connection has dropped, no IP addresses appear
and it says "Media Disconnected" or something like that.
It's like the IP addresses appear and then just
disappear! HELP!

You might have success reversing the wire from the back
of your P.C. that goes into your ericson or whatever
cable modem when the computer is powered off. Could be a
loose connect. On my P.C. I've had this problem. Also,
when it is ok there is a green light evident where the
plug goes into the P.C. at least there is on this P.C.

Completely Lost

You have an intermittent hardware issue. Either nic or cable or modem.
Have you noticed if there are link lights while it is disconnected? No need
to answer the question. Just rhetorical....trying to steer you in the right
direction......which is....hardware issue.

I am having similar problems with my XP, the only difference in my problem to you description is I don't lose my IP addresses. I have to reboot my computer to regain my connection. Went through a similar issue with my internet service provider, problem is still occuring. Any assistance (send responses to my email) would be greatly appreciated.

If you don't leave some of the previous post in your message, no one will
have a clue what the similar issues are.
