Loosing Internet Connectivity

B

Barb Bowman

to rule out the DNS server being the culprit, can you configure
different DNS servers on the NIC temporarily

type ncpa.cpl in the start/search field [enter]
right click the connection, then properties
ack the prompt
select IPv4, click properties
use the following DNS servers

4.2.2.2
4.2.2.3
OK

then run ipconfig /flushdns

does your experience improve?

Hi Barb,

OK, here are the results of your earlier suggestion. I did a tracert and an
nslookup when the connection was up for a baseline (pasted below above the
line of asterisks), and then did the same thing after the connection went
down (below the line). You can see that neither worked, and trying an
ipconfig/flushdns did nothing b/c I couldn't even get through to the DNS
server. Oh, and I'm not wedded to the idea of using the Trend Micro product.
I had Avast! on my old computer, and never had any problems with it.

Hi Barb,

This happens no matter what I'm doing. I can be cruising along, reading a
blog or any other site, and the connection will just drop.

I'll try the tracert next time it goes down.

File sharing is off, network discovery was on but I turned it off. I am
using Trend Micro PC-Cillin for my AV program and the only firewall I have is
the built-in Vista firewall.

a couple of things. it's not unusual for the modem lights to blink
even though you aren't actively doing anything but here is questions
one:

does this always happen when you are not using the computer or does
it ever happen when you are doing something (downloading a file,
watching a video, browsing, etc.)?

question two: when you are in this state, from an elevated cmd
prompt, can you tracert to yahoo.com ? do a nslookup ? please report
outcome of this. and if not, does running the command

ipconfig /flushdns

restore connectivity for you?

please confirm that network discovery and file sharing are turned
off in the Network and Sharing Center.

also, are you using any third party AV/firewalls like McAfee/Norton?

Hi Barb,

Changing the power plan doesn't seem to have helped. I was online for quite
a while yesterday (a little over 6 hours, the longest continuous stretch so
far, I believe), and hoped that maybe the problem was fixed. Unfortunately,
my connection did eventually drop. The problem isn't with Comcast or my
cable modem, as far as I can tell. The light on the modem that shows my
internet connection stays steady green, so I know that's OK, and the
send/receive lights continue flickering with activity even after the computer
says the connection has been lost. It's like something in the computer
eventually decides it doesn't want to talk to the modem anymore, even though
the info is still coming in. I'm stumped.

Thanks,
Tait

Hi Barb,

I unchecked that box in Device Manager a few days ago when I ran across it
as a possible solution on a different website. So far, it hasn't made a
difference. I did change my power plan to High Performace as you suggested;
I'll let you know if the problem persists after the change.

Thanks,

:

Comcast can assign different subnet masks so don't worry about that
at all.

Check your power management settings. In device manager, is the box
checked to turn off power on the NIC? Can you also try running with
the high power option to rule out any other power management
options?

Hi Barb,

I've been having an issue very much like the ones described in this thread
ever since I purchased my Dell Inspiron 1420 laptop last month, except that
my problem occurs when I'm on a wired connection, not a wireless one. After
getting the computer out of the box I plugged in the Ethernet cable and was
able to get online w/o a problem. I let Windows Update download and install
multiple security updates and hotfixes, after which I began experiencing
dropped connectivity. Thinking that one of the updates might be the problem,
I did a clean restore of the OS from the included CD, but the problem has
continued. After (usually) a few hours online, my connection will drop and
the network status icon will show a yellow triangle with an exclamation point
in it. If I do a mouseover, it says my access is Limited (or maybe just
Local - I can check when it happens again). I have called Dell and my ISP,
and nothing they suggested has solved the problem. The only thing that seems
to work is a reboot.

My network adapter is a Broadcom NetLink Fast Ethernet running what I
believe to be the latest drivers. I've tried resetting the adapter,
requesting a new IP address, everything I can think of (and I think most
suggestions made here), but all to no avail. The output of my ipconfig/all
is below; I would appreciate any suggestions you have for me.

Thank you!

Tait

My network adapter is a Broadcom NetLink Fast Ethernet running what I
believe to be the latest drivers. I've tried resetting the adapter,
requesting a new IP address, everything I can think of (and I think most
suggestions made here), but all to no avail. The output of my ipconfig/all
is below; I would appreciate any suggestions you have for me.

Thank you!

I tried your suggestion, and after I changed the DNS servers and flushed the
cache the return message was "Successfully flushed the DNS Resolver Cache."
The connection didn't come back up after that, though; I still had to restart.

I don't know of anyone else in my building who's having issues, unfortunately.

Hi Barb,

Sorry, I should have been clearer in my last post. When I said I disabled
IPv6, I did exactly what your blog post said to do, so I've already "unbound"
it. Sad to say, that didn't solve the problem. I just had to do a restart
after my connection went down yet again. I don't know what other network or
NIC settings to check, at this point. Maybe I just need a brand new network
card?

So far, it hasn't made a
difference. I did change my power plan to High Performace as you suggested;
I'll let you know if the problem persists after the change.

Thanks,

Tait

Comcast can assign different subnet masks so don't worry about that
at all.

Check your power management settings. In device manager, is the box
checked to turn off power on the NIC? Can you also try running with
the high power option to rule out any other power management
options?

ok, reset DHS to automatic like it was before.
so far you've unbound IPv6, changed from Trend Micro to ?

next thing to try is a driver rollback for the NIC. go into device
manager and right click the Broadcom NIC, right click, properties,
driver - is there a driver you can roll back to? what driver version
and date is this NIC using?

I tried your suggestion, and after I changed the DNS servers and flushed the
cache the return message was "Successfully flushed the DNS Resolver Cache."
The connection didn't come back up after that, though; I still had to restart.

I'm using version 10.10.0.0 of the NIC drivers, from April 2007. As (I
think) I mentioned in an earlier post, there are new drivers available, but
the only download links I've been able to find have just been to the driver
files themselves and not an actual installer. I did download the files and
try to replace every instance of the old ddriver files I could find, but
there were some that the system wouldn't let me remove, so I just gave up. I
don't know that a rollback would help, as I updated the drivers because I
hoped it would fix the problem, since the computer came with an even earlier
version, IIRC.

I updated to Vista SP 1 last night, since I had read that it made some
networking related changes. Everything seemed fine after the update - I was
online for a few hours before going to bed and turning off the computer - but
when I booted up this morning my connection was only up for 30 minutes before
it went down. I'm back to my initial suspicious that I have a bad NIC, since
none of the software tricks and tweaks I've tried so far have worked.

so far you've unbound IPv6, changed from Trend Micro to ?

next thing to try is a driver rollback for the NIC. go into device
manager and right click the Broadcom NIC, right click, properties,
driver - is there a driver you can roll back to? what driver version
and date is this NIC using?

I tried your suggestion, and after I changed the DNS servers and flushed the
cache the return message was "Successfully flushed the DNS Resolver Cache."
The connection didn't come back up after that, though; I still had to restart.

I don't know of anyone else in my building who's having issues, unfortunately.

to rule out the DNS server being the culprit, can you configure
different DNS servers on the NIC temporarily

type ncpa.cpl in the start/search field [enter]
right click the connection, then properties
ack the prompt
select IPv4, click properties
use the following DNS servers

4.2.2.2
4.2.2.3
OK

then run ipconfig /flushdns

does your experience improve?

I don't recommend Trend Micro. Would you consider uninstalling it
and trying a different AV like Avast (free versions available) or

Tait

:

a couple of things. it's not unusual for the modem lights to blink
even though you aren't actively doing anything but here is questions
one:

does this always happen when you are not using the computer or does
it ever happen when you are doing something (downloading a file,
watching a video, browsing, etc.)?

question two: when you are in this state, from an elevated cmd
prompt, can you tracert to yahoo.com ? do a nslookup ? please report
outcome of this. and if not, does running the command

ipconfig /flushdns

restore connectivity for you?

please confirm that network discovery and file sharing are turned
off in the Network and Sharing Center.

also, are you using any third party AV/firewalls like McAfee/Norton?

Hi Barb,

Sorry, I should have been clearer in my last post. When I said I disabled
IPv6, I did exactly what your blog post said to do, so I've already "unbound"
it. Sad to say, that didn't solve the problem. I just had to do a restart

NIC settings to check, at this point. Maybe I just need a brand new network

Thanks,
Tait

if there is a newer version of the driver and you extract the
driver, the inf file and the cat file (everything actually) and then
go into device manager, select the NIC and then update driver, it
should find the inf file and install the newer driver IF the driver
is appropriate for your NIC.

does anything show in the event logs at the time the connection is
lost?

does Dell have a newer/older driver for the 1510? are you using the
Dell utility to manage the wireless? if yes, try disabling it and
use native windows functionality.

I have to say I've had the same problem too... I've been surfing the web
for the longest time to look for a solution... first time I've seen
people actually have the same problem as me...

I'm using vista 64 bit and my router is linksys WRT54GL version 6
Wireless G (same as Dustin) and my wireless card is dell wireless 1510
WLAN Half mini card power

After 3 weeks of receiving my brand new Dell xps 1530, I started
loosing internet connection after a couple of hours... usually after it
went to sleep. It would diagnose the problem but says it can't find a
reason why it won't connect; moreover, it tells me to reset the router,
which in my case is not an option since 2 other people uses it at the
same time. After uninstalling 2 updates from microsoft: update rollup
for ActiveX killbits x64 and windows malicious software removal tool x64
I finally got my my internet conncetion back.

3 weeks later, the same thing happened after I installed a game called
plant tycoon... and again 3 weeks after that (today) i lost my internet
connection, AGAIN!

In short, im wondering if there's a cure for this repetitive problem of
mine...

Normally if you bring up the Dell utility there is a check box that
lets you toggle whether or not to use Dell or Windows to manage the
wireless. The version I have:

-Right click on the Dell Wireless Utility, located in the System
tray, look for several green bars, and choose Open.

-Click on the "Wireless Networks" tab.

-Uncheck the "Let this tool manage your wireless settings" checkbox.
-Click Apply then OK.

Then look for the Windows icon in the task tray near the clock and
right click that.

Thanks for the reply:)

oki. so, I have the newest update for the driver and i'm pretty sure
i'm using the dell utility to manage my wireless connection. But how do
I disable it? Is there a site where it tells you how to do it step by
step? I'm not very good at these kinds of stuff dats y i just uninstall
things to get it fixed lol.

thanks again

you have provided a link to a file on your hard drive.

if you right click the icon you DO have, what are the menu choices?

[image:
file:///C:/Users/Juliana/AppData/Local/Temp/moz-screenshot-1.jpg]I dont
have the dell wireless utility in my system tray... but i found this
site 'How do I start the Wireless/WLAN Zero Configuration?'
(http://www.inf.aber.ac.uk/advisory/faq/965/) that helped a lot. now the
problem is the part where i tell network connections to use windows to
manage my network... i can't seem to find that particular phrase when i
right click on wireless network connection and click properties.
