Loosing Internet Connectivity

B

Barb Bowman

your problem is most likely
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/933872/en-us

I don't know if this will help but try to reboot your router by
unpluging the power source for 10 seconds. I am using Vista home prem.
and have similar problems. After sleep mode no internet connection, but
this keeps me going. My router is a Westell 6100 and I would have to
reload the drivers each morning from the CD that came from Centurytel my
IP. I fixed this by typing in my address and going on site to fix the
problem.

I appreciate your frustration. I experience the same problem, have tried all
the steps in this thread, but continue to have internet connectivity issues.
I've come to accept that every configuration running a MS operating system
experiences some sorts of unique problems. But I have to say, this is a big
one. I'm tired of all this troubleshooting. There's no choice to to go on.
Does anyone have a suggestion that has not been discussed in this thread?

The comment in the post above is important. I.E., the connectivity issue
only occurs on some wireless networks.

On most networks I never experience a problem, but on my home network the
connections works correctly, then starts to stall out, the hangs and cannot
be recovered.

All this time, family members running other MS and MAC machines have no
problems.

These types of intermittent problems are difficult to describe and
troubleshoot. What should I try next?

are you saying you had a network card but it does not work anymore?

Barb, thank you I did try the fix but it didn't work. I am using the
Westell 6100 router, and a HP Pavilion desktop slimline with vista home
prem. 32 bit edition. For the first 3 mos. I used the Ethernet port but
that does not work for me anymore HP says its my ips, my ips says I need
a network card. I have the 802.11 b/g and both the yellow and green
lights are on untill it sleeps and they go out to. Thank you for any
help in this area as it seems to be an issue with a lot of users.

do you see the wired Ethernet card in device manager?

it is impossible to say what a power surge could have done andI
would not trust PC Doctor. If the computer is 4 months old, it may
be under warranty.

Hi Barb, a quick update My computer is 4 months old so everthing is up
to date as far as I can tell. I did have a power surge "LIGHTING" and
had to replace the power pack that HP supplied me with. When I checked
the Device Mgr. everthing is ok and I have ran all the PC Doctor tests,
no problems there. Centurytel is my isp and they have been great helping
me. Question, how do I get or set up a new network card or is it
necessary. Thanks.

are you connected to this Westell Modem via USB?
Westell WireSpeed Dual Connect is what shows up as a NIC, and I'm
guessing this is a USB connection to this modem.

I do not see a regular Ethernet adapter, just a USB wireless adapter
that is not in use.

what exact model # HP slimline desktop? there are multiple models
and the model # would describe what the wired Ethernet connection
should be. However, if it disappeared after the power surge, it is
likely that you have damage and need to send the machine in for
repair.

can you please open device manager
Control Panel, System, Device Manager and tell me exactly what you
see under Network Adapters?

Hi Barb, I am using a HP Pavilion slimline desktop model # s3120n,
Serial #MXF7240GMC and also software#73NAv3PrA1. I had on hand factory
recover disks that I had ordered and did a complete system restore,
after I installed the power Pack. The router is a Westell E90-610014-06.
It also has on it E99-610014-03 REV F, dated date is July 2007. You are
correct I am using the USB outlet, however the modem does have a
Ethernet hookup as well as the computer which I was using before. On the
back of my computer there are two little lights at the Ethernet plug in
a yellow and green that stay on until the computer sleeps. Thank you.

in device manager, right click the Westell then properties. go to
power management and uncheck the box to turn off the device to save
power.

on the bigger issue, I read the spec sheet and there is a LAN port
listed, but it doesn't list the specifics. can you look at
http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01063771.pdf, item 5 and
confirm you have this port? is anything connected to it?

Yes Barb, there are two items listed. (1) USB Wireless 802.11 b/g
Adaptor. The other is Westell WireSpeed Dual Connect Modem. I might add
that when I lose the connection the Westell will show a yellow
excleamation mark. When I troubleshoot the problem it will say the
Westell modem not working proper or it needs drivers. But all I have to
do is unplug the power from the modem for ten seconds and power the
modem back up and I have internet. Thank You for your help.

glad the USB is working. however, it looks like the Ethernet
connection may have gotten fried during that power surge. There is
no way of knowing if other areas of the motherboard may have been
impacted, etc. If the computer is under warranty, you should really
consider having this looked at.

Hi Barb, I went to device mgr. and there is no power management for
Westell, however I do have some good news. I uninstalled the Westell
drivers etc. and unpluged everything and then placed the CD from
centurytel in and ran the complete program following the on screen
instructions as well as those provided with the modem and have put the
computer to sleep around 5 or 6 times and it is working OK. The USB
light stills goes out when computer goes to sleep but it comes on as
soon as it awakes and the internet connection is there. YES I do have
the LAN and it is marked ETHERNET. This was what I was using before. It
is empty, there is nothing connected to it. Thank You.

no, don't enter an address there. hope HP is cooperative.

Thank You Barb, I will contact HP and see what they will do. One
question when I go to device mgr. and right click on properties then
Advanced on the left under property highlighted in blue is "Network
Address" on the right is "Value", which has a blank space for a address
and below that is not present which is checked. Should I enter a value
for the address? THANK YOU. By the way no internet this morning, but I
am up and running again, now where is HP telephone number??? Thanks

Hello Barb, I hope You could help me too. I have a very same problem with
internet connectivity as Dustin Brown who started this thread. I can easily
connect every time, but every few hours I loose connection, simetimes access
is marked as "local only" , but sometimes as "local and internet". I can
solve it sometimes by restarting the Windows, sometimes by reseting the
router and other time by reseting the LAN adapter. My Vista Home Premium was
working well for almost 10 months but few months ago this problem occurs for
the first time. I have automatic updates turn on and I have strong suspicion
that this problem started after one of the Vista updates during
October-November 2007. I have this problem on desktop PC with wired
connection but wireless has this problem even more often so I don't use it at
all. My laptop with XP works well on wireless connection. My processor is
Intel Pentium D CPU 3.40 GHz 3.4GHz,memory(RAM) 3071MB,32-bit OS. My LAN
adapter is Atheros L1 Gigabit Ethernet 10/100Base-T Controller. Antivirus is
AVG. Since the problem begin I have changed three diferent routers (Siemens
Gigaset SE-555, Zyxel P-600HW D-3 and now I have D-Link DSL-G684T). I can not
use anything else because that is what my service provider gives me and I
have IP-TV through same router. Firmware is also provided by my service
provider and must have support for IP-TV. EGD Evaluations tests are all
"suported" except test 5 - UPnP support test- which is not supported.
I tried disabling TCP IPv6 adress and QoS Packet Scheduler and Link-Layer
Topology Discovery I/O Driver with no result. Since I have started to use
static IP adress numbers of disconnections reduces so I continue to use
static IP adress on my LAN adapter.

I still see IPv6 -

there have been lots of reports on issues with drivers from WU for
the Atheros L1 Gigabit Ethernet NIC.

go into device manager - expand the properties for the NIC and roll
back to the older driver. if there are multiple drivers presented,
picked the one that worked up until a few months ago.

Thank You for Your prompt answer and yes, I still have IPv6 marked because
disabling it didn't achieved any result at all. I'll try go back to old
Atheros driver but I thik that some of the Vista updates produces this
problem with internet connectivity, not NIC driver update. I have updated
NIC driver AFTER problem started, trying to solve the problem, not before!
Thank You anyway.

Hi Barb,

I've been having an issue very much like the ones described in this thread
ever since I purchased my Dell Inspiron 1420 laptop last month, except that
my problem occurs when I'm on a wired connection, not a wireless one. After
getting the computer out of the box I plugged in the Ethernet cable and was
able to get online w/o a problem. I let Windows Update download and install
multiple security updates and hotfixes, after which I began experiencing
dropped connectivity. Thinking that one of the updates might be the problem,
I did a clean restore of the OS from the included CD, but the problem has
continued. After (usually) a few hours online, my connection will drop and
the network status icon will show a yellow triangle with an exclamation point
in it. If I do a mouseover, it says my access is Limited (or maybe just
Local - I can check when it happens again). I have called Dell and my ISP,
and nothing they suggested has solved the problem. The only thing that seems
to work is a reboot.

My network adapter is a Broadcom NetLink Fast Ethernet running what I
believe to be the latest drivers. I've tried resetting the adapter,
requesting a new IP address, everything I can think of (and I think most
suggestions made here), but all to no avail. The output of my ipconfig/all
is below; I would appreciate any suggestions you have for me.

Thank you!

Tait

Hi Bob,

How would I change the subnet mask manually? Isn't all that assigned
automatically by Comcast? I'm assuming it's in the Network and Sharing
Center somewhere, but I'm not sure where.

Thanks,

Tait

Yes, my error, I should have looked closer and noticed that this was
assigned automatically. But it sure does look strange. OTOH, It also could
be causing the problem you are talking about. ?? Keep an eye on it. You
could go into your command prompt window and type "ipconfig /release"
followed by "ipconfig / renew" (no quotes) and see if you get different
numbers.
