LongWinded Folder Names...

Oh Why Oh Why must Microsoft persist in using stupid longwinded folder names?
It really ^%*£&"! me a lot, Let me explain;

1) Documents & Settings: Should be DATA as this is exactly what its meant
for.

2) In NT4 we had a sensible PROFILE Folder. Why get rid of it?

3) Program Files: Should be PROGRAMS (It is obvious that it will contain
executable files, and not bunny rabbits from watership down).

4) Everything is preceded with "My" in XP, Excuse me but when I log in with
"MY" ID, I naturally expect to access MY FILES. Am I so stupid that I
need
to be reassured that "My Computer, My Recent Documents, My Network" are
actually mine & nobody else's? DOH... I must have logged in with the
wrong
ID & Password.

5) The same goes for the MENU, too many mouse clicks to do anything simple.

Why am I so upset? Well if you have RSI (I work in IT, sorry) and in mild pain
most of the time then you don't want endless typing for the sake of it...
especially when it involves Scripts & DOS in XP, It sort of slows you down a
lot..
Think about it, How much time & effort <extra Mouse Clicks & Key Strokes>
do YOU waste each year ?

So Microsoft, PLEASE GO MINIMALIST and save my wrist from too much pain.

Any feedback is much appreciated.

Cheers.

I assume from you comments that like me you delve into DOS
quite a lot even in XP because its faster and the
directory names are too long to type in.

Did you you that when you want to cd into one of these
long directories you dont have to type in the full name.

For instance if you wanted to cd into 'my lovely long
folder name' you only need to type cd \my*

Yes you are right Patrick, but often I deal with long names with only the
last character changed, ie c:\My.....V1 or .....V2. But I do appreciate what
you say and like me you never quite can let go of DOS.
I get round most problem by NEVER using the XP defaults, I have Data &
Programs folders which I use instead, Classic Menu from START with a max of 2
SubMenus. This structure also helps with DataRecovery if things go wrong (I
had a user who's profile got really screwed and lost most of his Phd 3 weeks
before submission, That was BAD).

Either way, XP is still easier to work with than Linux (I use both). Cheers.

Another option is to take a page from Unix.

Download junction.exe and create NTFS junction points.

http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/source/misc.shtml#junction

This allows you to create a folder structure called \usr\local\home and link it to C:\Documents and Settings\carl\My Documents. You can create a folder named \bin and link it to C:\Program Files and so on and so forth. So, when you are scripting or tip-tapping away on your keyboard, with a song in your heart, you can quickly move around in your linked folder structure.

This is not a shortcut. It is an actual ntfs junction.

Good Luck,

carl

Good idea, I can even integrate this with my Mandrake .
Something to do this weekend perhaps? OK, I am sold.
Still, if only Microsoft made it simpler from the start.... Cheers.
