"log on to" not showing on logon screen

I have a laptop running windows 2000 pro. When I try to logon to the machine
it no longer shows the "log on to" box with the domain in it even after I
press options. I cannot log on to the machine now with the administrator
account or any other for that matter. The only thing I did was to plug a
cable modem into my computer and when I booted up the domain box was missing.

try logging on with the convention user@domain in the username box. so, if
the computer is joined to the domain.local ad domain, then in the username
box, type (e-mail address removed) and enter the admin password. though,
if you are disconnected from your domain and the domain admin has never
logged onto your machine before, you will not be able to use this method.
however, connecting a cable modem should not affect the gina in any way. you
may have a more serious problem at hand. do you remember the
username/password of the local administrator account?
