locked out of computer

My grandpa gave me a laptop and it was having problems so I restored it to
last known settings that worked correctly... well now it is asking for a
password and grandpa doesn't know what it is. I can't access windows at all.
and I don't have a password key. Is there a backup program or log in to reset
this?
