Sharing on XP Pro network

Guest

I know I've asked this before but without good results so I'm trying again
hopefully explaining myself much better.
I have an XP Pro network with one machine called Den and one Laptop. My
objective is to see all the files of Documents and Settings from Laptop on
Den to both work on them and to back them up to an external drive on Den. I
turned simple file sharing off on Laptop.
On Laptop I have two users: Grandpa (administrator, no password) and Guest
(off). On Den I have Me (administrator, password), Grandpa (administartor, no
password) only because it was part of the previous advice though I log onto
Me all the time, and Guest (off).
On Laptop I set C:, C:\Documents and Settings and C:\Documents and
Settings\Grandpa to share fully with a hand holding them up. These shared
folders and drive can be seen in My Network Places on Den. However, I can
only open on Den the Laptops All User folder. Get permission error on
Administrator and Grandpa of the Laptops Doxuments and Settings subfolders.
How can I share all these folders? What else can I do. It was much simpler
when I used to use punched cards many years ago except if you dropped them!
Please help a frustrated Grandpa.

Mike,

Are you running Simple, or Advanced File Sharing? Any time I see "C:\Documents
and Settings" in a problem, it's likely a Guest sharing issue. If you have
either XP Home, or XP Pro running SFS, which only shares under Guest, you can't
share all of "C:\Documents and Settings" effectively.

I turned off simple file sharing as advised before.

OK, you're using AFS. How did you turn Guest off? Is Grandpa activated for
network access?

Did you disable the requirement for non-blank passwords?

I really hate this phrase, please restate.
"from Laptop on Den"
Does this refer to using Den, or Laptop, as the server? If you look at this
carefully, you'll see that it could be construed both ways. In this case, I
prefer not to guess.

I didn't turn Guest off. When I look at users that's what it says. I never
use Guest.
I didn't turn off any non blank password requirements. Don't know anything
about that.
Grandpa activated for network access? I set it as administrator. What else
to do?
The Den is where I want to look at the files from Laptop. The external drive
is connected to Den. So I guess we can consider Den the server.
Sorry for all the confusion and lack of better answers. I do keep learning
new things with these machines every day, but I'm lost on this sharing thing.
Thanks for all the help.

Mike,

OK, if you're looking at Users, you're probably looking at the local user list.
I'd bet that you're accessing the server using the Guest account, since you
haven't activated Grandpa. You have to activate / de activate users, for network
use, separately.

Please read my articles, it's easier to describe the details using a web site
and HTML, than to write them here in text.

I'll check out the articles when I get to the machines. As far as Guest, etc.
I use Grandpa to log into Laptop and Me to log into Den. I'll let you know
what happens. Thanks. By the way, do I have to be logged into Gradpa on Den
in order to see the grandpa files on Laptop? I didn't want to do that.

Mike,

Use the Grandpa account to login locally to Laptop, and use the Me account to
login locally to Den. Define both accounts to be used for network access
(described below). Disable the Guest account on both computers.

When you go to access Den, from Laptop, the first time, you'll be asked to login
(described below). You'll use the Me account with its password. Thereafter,
your login to Den (from Laptop) should be retained on Laptop.

login. You'll use the Grandpa account with its password. Thereafter, your

Please read the following articles very carefully, as there will be a test (no,
this is a test - of my ability to reason in summer heat).

Activating an account on a server, to enable network access from a client:

Logging in (remotely) to a server, when logged in (locally) to a client, in
order to access files on the server:
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/file-sharing-under-windows-xp.html#NonGuest>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/file-sharing-under-windows-xp.html#NonGuest
(Rules 1 and 4 will apply to you).

Does this make sense?
