Local connec. Settings and BEyond

I was hoping someone might be aware of an MVP's site or a place to find more
detailed info on Advanced Firewall settings.

To be more specific, a site that caters to the techno ignorant when trying
to understand a given explaniation, i.e.:

Below is a direct quote from MSN when I wanted to get more info on UPnP
Framework settings,
"
A UPnP-based network consists of a set of UPnP devices that can be monitored
by one or more control points. A UPnP device can contain a number of services
and nested devices. For identification purposes, the device must host an XML
device description document that lists specific properties about the device,
the services associated with the device, and the nested devices. The XML
schema for UPnP device descriptions is called the UPnP Template Language
(UTL). The device description document must also include a Uniform Resource
Locator (URL) for the service description. The service description is an XML
document that lists the actions and state variables that apply to a specific
service offered by the device.

The control point is responsible for enumerating UPnP devices on the
network, searching for an instance of a particular UPnP device, and
controlling a service on a UPnP device. The control point can also subscribe
to events to receive notification of the change of state variables on a UPnP
device."

Well that certainaly cleared things up for me????

I have noticed that certain Advanced Firewall settings have changed from
time to time and would like to be able to understand "at my 5th grade
education leval" what the real world meanings of these terms are.

I daily run full programs such as Ad-Aware, both deep scans, and ADS scans
and run an anti virus program but what concerns me is the processes I see
running in Task manager as well as some of the "questionable" traffic I see
when monitoring my Internet traffic.

I guess I could have simply asked is there a place for the Internet language
challenged to find more easily understood explanations of what should be and
not be running or allowed in settings.

I only have 2 computers and do no file sharing between them and do not run a
server etc,

Any help???? Anyone, Please :>)

If you're looking for advice on advanced firewall settings, I would start in
Usenet groups alt.computer.security, or comp.security.firewalls. You can use
Google Groups to start.
<http://groups.google.com/group/alt.computer.security>

If you want help with terminology, and lots of reading, start from WikiPedia.
