What I would like to know, are the programs that you see running in msconfig necessary to load @ login? The reason I ask is that once I log in it takes 4 to 5 minutes to completely load. For instance I have ( Norton Internet Security, AntiVirus, Spyhunter, Enigma Pop up stopper, the volume control icon and also a telephone icon for a dial up modem). All of these items are on the taskbar. My actual question would be , Is there anything in MSconfig that I can safely stop from loading. I would appreciate if anyone has specific program names, so that I am not guessing which ones to deactivate.
Thank you for the time

You are right you don't need all those programs starting at boot up. Here
are some links: I like the first one.

The other poster provided links to websites that can identify specific processes
- system and otherwise - and advise which ones can be disabled at startup.
That's one way to improve things.

You also might want to see what actually is taking up cpu, and go from there.

If you want to know more about the many processes running on your computer, get
Process Explorer (free) from
<http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/procexp.shtml>. Provides way more
information than Task Manager. You can look at any process and see what modules
it contains, and who wrote or distributed each module. And graph its memory and
CPU usage. And see how it is called to start.

MSConfig is one tool to disable startup items. I like StartupControlPanel
(free) from <http://www.mlin.net/>, which is more user friendly, and offers less
dangerous selections than MSConfig.

Chuck
