How do you cut down the Programs that load at Boot?

How do I reduce the programs that load at boot to cut down on the time it
takes to boot? I realize many are necessary to run but as I have loaded netw
applications ,some set the system to load at boot. An example is Palm. I have
16 icons in the system tray and would like to reduce to 8. I can run
"msconfig" and get to the System Configuration Utility, click on Start Up Tab
and remove the check on the programs I don't want to load. I then click Apply
and OK and re- boot and they come back and load. What am I missing? I have
Windows XP with SP3 and all updates. Laptop with 1 Meg RAM. I hope some one
can clue me as to what I am missing!

Use msconfig (Start/run/msconfig) is the easiest/simplest way

If you want to dig deeper:
Try Autoruns from the MS Windows SysInternals site:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/ProcessesAndThreads/Autoruns.mspx

AutoRuns will show/list all apps/etc. that load/run when you first boot
(Boot Execute tab),
when you logon (Logon tab) and other programs that load (grouped by labeled
tabs) for easy viewing.

It also provides the ability to selectively allows you to stop (use with
care) any program that you don't want to load. You can undo any changes you
have made.

Note: To get additional details on an item in the list you may need to
highlight the item (right click) and use the 'Search Online' option to get
the details, especially useful for the more obscure items in the list.

You probably have insufficient rights to record your msconfig changes
in the registry. Try logging on as administrator when using msconfig.

In most cases, with "well-mannered" applications, it's usually as
simple as opening the undesired program and deselecting the option to
"display icon in the system tray" or to "start when Windows starts."

Additionally, Look in the C:\Documents and Settings\All
Users\Start Menu\Programs\Start Up and C:\Documents and
Settings\username\Start Menu\Programs\Start Up folders, and in the
system registry, primarily in the
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and
HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run keys.

I do not have system set up to require an administrator authorization. Any
other ideas?

Good idea and went in and was able to stop Palm from loading at start up. I
can't get Quick time, Harmony remote, Windows Messenger, and PCTV Remote to
stop loading as I was able to with Palm. Any more ideas?

In QT open and then open the preferences and set it there. (I prefer
removing it completely though)

messenger - same thing - open it ( or right-click systray icon and edit
preferences uncheck
'load at startup'.
Generally each program by default will WANT to 'be easy for you to use' so
will start itself . When you are installing each app - do NOT take the
defaults. Elect a CUSTOM install and uncheck those boxes. Then they won't
appear at all. If already there just open - edit preferences and uncheck
STARTUP or systray icon - or whatever they call it.
PCTV same thing
