Listening to Windows Media Player alone

My system makes an assortment of sounds from time to time, about 99% are
"New mail".
If I want to listen to something in Windows Media Player without
interruption, is there a way to achieve this?

WMP and the sound-effects are both controlled by "Wave" input, so I
cannot segregate them there.

Hi Steve
Go to Control Panel/Sounds and Audio Devices and in the drop down menu
against Sound Scheme select "No Sounds"
