I cannot get any sound from windows media player; the sound card and speakers
are ok, I get fanfares from windows and iTunes plays music, but WMP makes no
sound at all even though the display shows that it is reading the files. Any
suggestions please?

click on the mute button on the speaker icon on your toolbar. sometimes it
accidently gets muted. Also if you double click the icon the master volume
appears and you can move the volume button there to left or right. Also you
have a volume control on windows media player. Hope this helps

Health warning! I am a mere amateur but will share this! I had the same
problem on my return from holiday; one of my kids used my pc a lot while we
were away.

I found a solution which worked (apart from a kids exclusion zone). From My
Computer, Properties, Hardware, Device Manager, DVD/CD drives, I uninstalled
the DVD/CD drives, then rebooted. Windows reinstalled my drives, Media Player
worked a treat & Dad's frown vanished!

Coincidence or fix? Dunno, but it worked for me!
