Ahhh, good one!
I tried put Gutsy on my 2.2 gig Athlon64 box as a dual-boot and it crashed
during install and trashed the entire filesystem of both the semi-installed
Linux distro as well as XP. Whilst it was good practice to restore my
filesystem to the enlightened NTFS, I was hoping that the result would be
different.

That's pretty funny. You might want to check your hardware. There's
forums for people like you.

"entire filesystem of both the semi-installed > Linux distro as well as XP"

That, my friend, is not a normal problem.

Damn, Thinkpad T40 is ****ing famous.

Get your story straight. Are you booting with a Live CD or are you dual
booting? Or did you try Live CD and then dual boot?

I tried the Ubuntu live CD to make sure it would work ok, and then I
installed it on the hard drive along with XP.
It is perfect.

Most customers are ****ing stupid.

You must be crazy then.

As I said, customers are stupid. They will walk into a big store, see a
Windows computer and bring that damn box home. Freaks will stand in
queues for hours and days in the freaking cold to get their hands on
some $300 junk Windows on Black Friday. Why do you think Vista sells?
Because people buy it. Don't give me the baloney that people are forced
to buy it. If they wanted to buy a system pre installed with Linux, they
would...if they ever knew what Linux was.

Of course people aren't forced to buy Windows... but for many years now,
it has been the most readily available option, and it is the one all
their friends are buying and talking about, so they follow the herd.

But certain factors are changing the situation in 2008, opening people's
minds to new possibilities. One is Microsoft's own fault... Vista
stinks, enough so OEMs have been forced to continue offering systems with
XP. People/businesses with good-running XP systems are being advised not
to buy anything.

The other factor is external... low-priced, Linux-based machines like the
Cloudbook, Eee PC, Zonbu, etc. They are coming to market on the theory
that some people want a basic system that is simple to use. If even one
of these products takes off, MS will have a whole new category of
competition. And it will be a category where anyone can play, from the
smallest custom builder to the biggest OEM.

Which is the correct way to do do things. As you will discover, Mark Kent
is absolutely clueless and is widely killfiled for his extreme views and
the nonsense he talks. There is only one voice in the Mark kent's world
and that is his own.

He will undoubtedly call you ca troll and liar soon. Ignore him.

Linux users and zealots love to blame everything under the sun but their
beloved Linux.

With them, it's always the other person/hardware/company's fault and it's
never Linux.

Could you imagine buying one of those laptops, taking it home and finding
out that half the features don't work with Linux?

Can you say PISSED OFF CUSTOMER!!

And this isn't some fly by night manufacturer, it is the 4th LARGEST PC
hardware manufacturer in the world.

IOW it's not like "Basement Bobby" the Linux guru is selling these things.

It once again proves that this particular case is not a fault of Linux
itself but Lenovo that took irresponsible decision of installing OS with
out properly testing hardware-software compatibility.
Linux out of box will not support all the features in laptop with out
spending some time on configuring - the same issue we can observe with
Windows$.

Welcome to Linux....

And you know something?
The Linux zealots will deny this happens, but real people know it happens
all the time.

Excellent idea Roy, challenge cross-posting with the evidence.

Ok, let's start here:

Subject says:
Linux Loaded Lenovo Laptop..More Linux Slopware..This is getting
hysterical....

Facts, backed up by a credible source say:

http://www.channelinsider.com/c/a/Reviews/Lenovo-Launches-Linux-Laptop-and-Leaves-Lots-of-Questions/

"The first part of the document covered ¡§features not supported.¡¨ Some of
those features are:

* ThinkVantage Active Protection System.
* ThinkVantage Access Connections for SUSE Linux
* ThinkPad Configuration for SUSE Linux
* ThinkPad Power Manager for SUSE Linux
* Wireless WAN Adapter
* ThinkVantage Button
* (Intel Graphics System) DVI Output"

" Seeing that XEN was preinstalled got our interest. What a great
idea¡Xdeliver the system with virtualization already in place. Our amazement
at such an insightful idea quickly waned once we tried to use the XEN boot
option and were rewarded with an Error 15: File Not Found. We tried to
resolve the problem using instructions from SUSE, a control panel installer
and a few other tricks, but we came up empty."
