They are trying to redeem themselves by letting Vista users upgrade to XP.

For those who watch this, there is a coordinated act here between several

Some of these posters are possibly the same person (a sockpuppet show). To

Meet Thomas Brooks. He's a viral marketer for Microsoft.

| It's unfortunate that paid blogging is becoming all the more prevalent in
| communities like 1UP. And it's not just the blogs or reviews, it's also the
| message boards. Microsoft, for instance, also has a person (or people?) who
| is paid to post on some of the popular gaming boards (and no, Jeff Bell

| implied with the paychecks.
|
| What bums me out about all this viral stuff is that, to some extent, you
| don't know who to trust anymore. There was a time when, if you no longer
| believed in what the professional editors where saying, you could at least
| count on your fellow gamers for honest opinions. Not anymore. In a sense,

No power management or wireless support in a laptop? Is this 2001? Come
on! Lenovo makes a great product. My R61 with 64 bit Vista Business is a
great machine. Why is Lenovo diminishing its own brand by selling its
computers with a half baked OS?

I don't know about this product, but I just bought an off-lease Thinkpad
T40 and set it up as a dual-boot XP/Ubuntu rig. All of the most
important features (including wireless) worked from the Ubuntu live CD.
The only problem I had was configuring the built-in winmodem for the
dialup connection that I need part of the time. It was a nuisance, but
eventually I got it to work just fine.

I keep XP around in case there is a specific Windows program I want to
use, but I most of the time I use Ubuntu.

The truth is that Linux is an excellent desktop OS, and it keeps getting
better in steady increments, whereas Windows keeps getting replaced with
a completely new version. I understand why Microsoft does this -- they
need to keep selling new licenses to keep the shareholders happy. But
the value to the customer is dubious. Any PC made in the past 5 years is
a powerful machine, and most users don't benefit from upgrades as much as
they once did. I think we're near the end of the era where people will
continue to shell out for a new box with a the latest version of Windows
whenever Microsoft decides it's time for everyone to upgrade.

Well,

That's what happens when hardware and Linux is matched together by
people who do not know anything but the M$ products.
Linux (when properly configured) works very well on laptops.
It runs wireless, cameras, audio, etc and it has better memory
management (in opposite to Vsta crap).

The problem is rather on vendor side.
Laptop maker do not treat seriously Linux and force us to buy
machines with preloaded Vista garbage.

That's not actually correct; Windows gets replaced with an upgraded version
each time; though the upgrades made to Windows before the release of a new
o/s are pretty radical, and, as in the case of Vista; don't always work
properly initially.
I understand why Microsoft
does this -- they need to keep selling new licenses to keep the
shareholders happy. But the value to the customer is dubious.

M$ do release new Windows versions too quickly IMO: As was the case with
Vista; they set a target and rush at the last minute to meet it, at the same
time sacrificing functionality and performance of their new product for
functionality and performance of the company with regard to their
self-imposed schedule.
Any
PC made in the past 5 years is a powerful machine,

I disagree; I think the figure is more like 2 years.
and most users
don't benefit from upgrades as much as they once did.

Whilst that is true in many regards with operating system/software upgrades;
hardware upgrades in many instances can bring huge performance benefits.
I think we're
near the end of the era where people will continue to shell out for a
new box with a the latest version of Windows whenever Microsoft
decides it's time for everyone to upgrade.
It appears that Vista was the herald of an albeit
not-as-beneficial-as-M$-would-have-liked software-led technological leap.
users were virtually forced to upgrade or renew their machines in order to
be able to keep up: However I feel that this was possibly a one-off
ocurrence rather than a trend.

As a small computer builder / retailer I continue to build machines equipped
for both XP and Vista. Personally I much prefer XP and am convinced that
there are so many bugs to iron out with Vista that it will take a
considerable amount of time in order for this to happen; possibly up until
the release of Windows Seven; thus relegating Vista to the historical
ranking of a second "Windows ME".

I have run Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon and am rather impressed at the design of it
all; although less than happy with its overall functionality. Although it
ran in RAM direct from the CD the automated install crashed repaetedly when
I tried to install it as a dual boot alongside XP on a computer running a
single-core Athlon 64 on a Shuttle motherboard with 2GB DDR2 RAM plus a
512MB Asus graphics card.

Soooooooooo......it's OK for OEMs to ship borked Vista installations,
but not Linux installs ?

Just as all your sockpuppets place the blame for OEM Vista installs
on the OEM, don't you think the same goes for OEM Linux installs ?

Oh wait, that's only logical. Nevermind.

Yes you were warned on previous occasions about posting logic to Linux
groups: It confuses the readers.

It's ironic that your name is Gomez and you're posting with all the
intellect of Jason Gomez aka Syphillis Syndrone: The point here is that a
new machine with a preinstalled Linux distro has compatibility issues
between its o/s and its hardware. It may well be that you know deep down
that it is once again the fault of the Linux distro as is usually the case,
and hence you are seeking to change the topic to a
"Let's-slag-off-Microshaft" free-for-all rather than confront the
substandard nature of Linux as an overall situation.

might reconsider Linux. For now, Linux looks like a big loser.

Well, gee whiz, I have a T23 with CentOS on it and it does all
that stuff. Maybe you should just pick up a nice used Thinkpad for 200
bucks and put CentOS on it. Instead of spending all that money for something
configured for Vista.

Thank you Moshe for taking the time to warn us about this substandard
laptop. You have saved me some aggravation.
I was planning on ordering a laptop with Linux as the operating
system but after reading about this Lenovo model I am now
reconsidering. The way I see it if Lenovo which I believe is part of
IBM cannot make Linux function correctly on their products what chance
does a company like Dell have?
I have now decided to just go with a Vista based laptop and if Linux
someday is able to utilize the hardware features that my laptop has I
might reconsider Linux. For now, Linux looks like a big loser.

You are welcome!
For the record, Roy Schestowitz, if you haven't figured it out yet, is a
complete idiot.
Notice how he has not said a word about the Lenovo Linux laptop not working
with Linux.
He can't because it is a fact.

So instead he tries to SPAM his filth and lies all over the place to cloud
the issue up and hijack the thread.

My advice is for you to check Roy Schestowitz;s links out before accepting
them as fact.
More often than not, they will refer back to his own websites, and he has a
few of them.

If you really want to run Linux on a laptop, buy a Windows Vista based unit
and install Linux yourself.
This way if Linux bombs out, and chances are it will, you will at least
have Vista to reload.
What would you do if you had bought that Lenovo POS?
You'd be stuck with a hamstrung laptop half running Linux.
