Linking Powerpoint 2007 with Excel 2007

What I am looking to do is link a Powerpoint template with an Excel
spreadsheet. I am currently developing an Access database that, after
processing customers data, will export the summarised data to an Excel
spreadsheet. I was wondering if it is then possible to automatically link
this spreadsheet to a Powerpoint presentation template to feed tables and
charts so that the whole process can be automated. I ask this question as
now, in Powerpoint 2007, when you wish to 'edit data' from a chart, an
instance of Excel 2007 is opened. How are these linked?
