Linking docs to tasks Outlook2003 SP1

I can insert objects into tasks and choose files located on my PC (excel
document for instance)and choose to link it and show it as an icon, however,
I have not been able to get the linked files to actually open. Has anyone
tried this and had better luck?
 
It doesn't work with tasks. This behavior is due to an obscure security
issue that has never been explained to my satisfaction.
