" Limited or No Connectivity" message in Sytem Tray

A

admiral_victory

Today , after installing XP Pro S2 , I now have an icon in the Sys
Tray with a yellow triangle supperimposed on it which includes an
exclamation mark.

If I place the cursor over this it says "Local Area Connection 2-
Speed 512.0 Kbps - Status : Limited or no connectivity "

If I left click on this , the Local Area Connection 2 Status box
appears which has two tabs , General and Support.

In the Support Tabe there is a button "Repair" which starts a process
of attempting to repair this error but which , eventually , fails to
do so . It then states that the problem might be with the Network and
invites me to contact the person involved with the network.

As my PC is a stand-alone I'm puzzled by this error . I connect to the
Web by means of a DSL connection using my phone and this is working
normally.

Apart from the recent installment of SP2 , the only other change has
been a new m/b some week or so agao which I notice has added a
Gigabyte Ethernet 10/100/1000 Base-T Adapter under "Network adapters"
in Device Manager.

Could any of these changes be the cause of this error message ? and ,
if so , what should I do to eliminate them ?

Go into your Bios setup and disable your onboard Lan adapter. Your problem
will be solved.
If you ever need to set up a network you can go back and enable it.

Sounds like the new inbuilt network card is being detected but because you
are not connected to a LAN it shows up as a faulty connection. You can
disable the network card in the system BIOS or in the Device Manager to
prevent this. Alternatively you could uncheck the "Notify me when this
connection has limited or no connectivity" in the properties for the
connection. I would chose the first method as it prevents the pc from trying
to establish a LAN connection when it boots this way the machine will boot
much more quickly.

Even if you are using the on-board LAN you can get this message.

There have been several reports of this behaviour.

It seems that after SP2 the on-board LAN gets given a complete useless
IP address.

FWIW I followed the advice here and , initially , only disabled the
network card in the BIOS.

Although this removed the network card from D.M. I still got the
"restricted access " warning .

When I then followed the other advice and unchecked the "Notify me
when this connection ....etc " in Properties I then got rid of the
warning.

Reset your router or DSL modem, either by pushing a reset button (i
there is one) or unplugging and then plugging in the power cord. I ha
this problem and resetting the router fixes the problem. Not sure wha
the problem is but this should fix it. I also read on another site tha
this worked for someone else. Undoing the LAN is not necessary and ma
complicate things for you later.

HERE IS THE SOLUTION:

http://www.spychecker.com/download/..nsockxpfix.html

first disable any antivirus software and run this- it fixes registr
errors.
Oh yeah- it's called winsockXPfix.exe-- it's free

- I also had the same problem- "repair" connection would not work- bu
if I
closed my antivirus software temporarily it would work. And afte
downloadin
g and running this small program the problem does not even exis
anymore.
