Leaving copies of messages on server UNREAD

I have successfully made an account that downloads messages from a web-based
email account (the mail.domainname.com Pop3 and SMTP deal), but when it
downloads the messages, they all appear as read on the web-based account
when accessing via the web (they go from being bold, or unread, to not bold,
or read).

Is there any way to download the messages to Outlook, leave them on the
server, but ALSO not change their status from Unread to Read on the host
server?

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated, and thanks for reading.

Depends on the mail server not Outlook.

Given that, then, can someone tell me what questions I need to ask of the
hosting company to find out if this is possible, or what I need to ask them
to do with the mail server settings? Most tech support I've talked to just
have a book with the top ten most common questions and a scripted response
to them, and no idea how to deal with anything else (and I imagine this is a
"something else" issue).

Thanks

Ask them the exact same thing as you asked here but change "Outlook" to
"mail client";

"Is there any way to download the messages to Outlook, leave them on the

As said before; whether they can change it depends on the mail server. The
mail server of the ISP that delivers me Internet access marks them as read
when they are collected by a mail client and the ISP that host my website
leaves them in the unread state and onl marks them as read when I read the
items online.
