Latest AVG update - problems?

P

Paul Blarmy

Since installing the latest AVG update (last night) my Win98SE machine is
having shutting down problems.

Whilst I cannot be 100% sure it is AVG, my troubleshooting involving the
use of Go-Back makes it pretty certain that it is AVG causing the
problems.

The first time after installing the update my machine froze when shutting
down. Subsequent times it hangs on the 'Windows is now shutting down'
screen.

Anyone else had this problem?

I just installed it on my WinXP system, and no problems at all.

My WinXP is fine too. The problem is just on my Win98SE box.

No problem with my very old, very slow, and very cantankerous W98se
laptop. Maybe a complete uninstall/reg cleaning/re-install would be in
order? <shrug>

i'm running 98SE also and had my machine blue screen on first
attempt at booting this morning. I was caused one of the AVG files,
but a second attempt went fine. I haven't noticed any shutdown
problems. (yet?)

Hmmmm -- upgraded AVG yesterday (just the latest update - I think just
definitions, 134 k or something), and had a problem with blue screen at
bootup (Win98se Gateway 9300 laptop Pent III) yesterday evening AND this
morning. I used GoBack last evening to go back just AFTER I did the upgrade
but just BEFORE I did a complete scan, and it started. After this morning's
problem, I used the reset button on my laptop (did not use Go Back) and
everything started well. Don't know if it's AVG, but something suddenly is
amiss..

Just checked on the AVG message board. Seems like a bunch of folks are
having the bootup problem after the last update - exactly the same as I'm
having. I'm going to use GoBack to put my computer to before I did
yesterday's update and wait for the next one. A moderator on the AVG message
board did quite a bit of research on this since she is having the same
problem. She has a fix for those who don't have GoBack. But it's a bit of
work.

I don't see anything about problems on shut down. My shutdowns are fine.

Just checking computer activity in GoBack from 6:41 last evening when I did
my upgrade. It shows that the AVG update did in fact create, delete and
replace the following files.

Microavi.avg
Upd_Vers.cfg
Incavi.avm

Don't know if this is more than a definition update. It might be. But it
does seem to be causing problems.

You might be right. I'd give it a go but I notice further down this
thread that there do seem to be problems with some PC's with this
particular update.

Switch to Avast. Save yourself some headaches.

I see that now. Workaround (temporary) is to find the *.bin files in the
Grisoft directory, sort by date, and delete the last *two* (should be
what was downloaded yesterday). Save the rest to a temporary folder.
Then do a full uninstall of AVG, including deleting the Grisoft
directory. Download the latest avgfree_installer.exe, and when updating
point it to the *.bin files you saved earlier. Disable automatic update
and monitor the Grisoft forums or other trusted/knowledgeable sources
until a permanent fix is published. This will provide protection up to a
couple days ago.

BTW, my cantankerous W98se laptop is giving me troubles this morning.
Not the same sort as described here and elsewhere, so may or may not be
related. One quirk about this machine is that in never detects the NIC
on cold first boot -- it always requires a reboot to connect. This
morning, it's hanging on reboot... hmmmm... now, after a couple reboot
attempts and a couple hard shutdowns, it just came up, is connected, and
can be seen on the network... who knows... <shrug>

I'm waaaay offbase with what I wrote below. I was still thinking in
terms of how AVG handled update *.bin files back in v6.

My cantankerous laptop crapped out, and I am confident it is due to the
AVG update dfficulties that have been raised -- finally was able to get
into Safe Mode and uninstalled AVG altogether, and everything is now
fine. Will post back with whatever "solution" I come up with.

Here's what worked for me:

Boot to Safe Mode (if necessary), and uninstall AVG through Add/Remove.

Download the avg70free_323a539.exe installer from here:

http://free.grisoft.com/doc/Get+AVG+FREE/lng/us/tpl/v5

Fortunately, I had archived the full update *.bin files from 7-12-05.
There are three files when including the Recommended update dated
5-24-05. I have uploaded a *.zip file containing them to YouSendIt
(11Mb):

http://s11.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=1WBRYCLDA03AF1DBW5Z89UJ7EW

Create a temporary folder, and extract the *.bin files to it.

Run the AVG installer. DO NOT chose to update during the installation or
first run process. Allow AVG to finish/close, then reopen it manually.
Manually go to Scheduler, and DISable the Update Plan in Basic Mode.

Next, go to Control Center>Check for updates, and when prompted as to
Internet or Folder, point it to the folder you created above. This will
bring AVG up to date as of 7-12-05.

Continue to monitor the Grisoft forums or this thread for further
updates.

Add my old Pentium II running 98se to the growing crowd of screwed-up
computers since yesterday (Friday, 7/15) morning. BSODs, mainly on
boot-up, but liable to occur any time at all, and seemingly creating an
accumulating problem that eventually disallows getting into normal mode
at all. Just couldn't figure the source of the problem at all from the
BSOD messages until the last one about thirty minutes ago that mentioned
AVG in its gibberish. And I had coincidentally just been reading this
thread about others having similiar problems to my own. I then tried
uninstalling AVG in normal mode, but got a BSOD and had to reboot. Went
into Safe Mode, uninstalled the AVG successfully, rebooted back into
normal mode, and here I am: So far so good and praying the problem has
been resolved, knowing only time will tell.

Now to take a look at the AVG forum to see how to get my AVG back. (BTW,
I recently tried Avast! on this box and had certain problems with it
that sent me back to AVG.) If this is truely an AVG issue, I hope it's
resolved soon. I hate to think of all the Win98se boxes out there that
I've put AVG on for other people . . .

We've received several similar reports and we're currently investigating
the problem. It is probably connected to a particular file/library in
Windows 98/Me but we are unable to reproduce it in our test lab. It
occurs only on certain machines and configurations.
Sorry about the problems

Anybody out there online right now with this problem, who is also able
to restart his/her PC to a safe mode and replace some file as specified
in an e-mail? If so, please, post a note here. We'll contact you to
check a fix. Thank you.
Please, only users who have no problems restarting into the safe mode
etc. - we will publish the update as soon as it's verified! Thank you.
