We've received several similar reports and we're currently
investigating the problem. It is probably connected to a particular
file/library in Windows 98/Me but we are unable to reproduce it in
our test lab. It occurs only on certain machines and configurations.
Sorry about the problems

Anybody out there online right now with this problem, who is also able
to restart his/her PC to a safe mode and replace some file as
specified in an e-mail? If so, please, post a note here. We'll
contact you to check a fix. Thank you.
Please, only users who have no problems restarting into the safe mode
etc. - we will publish the update as soon as it's verified! Thank you.

A fix very similar to what I posted above is contained here:

Upgraded AVG on my W2K machine and had no problem shutting down. Virus
base is 267.8.15/60 7/15/2005 3:00:00 PM.

Updated my Win98SE to AVG "7.0.336 267.8.16/50 2005-07-15 15:00:00"
with no notable differences. No problems shutting down or starting
up. Note that it is "267.8.16/50" not "267.8.15/50".

Decided to check for another update while typing this and there is
one. Now at "7.0.336 267.9.0/50 2005-07-16". The time has been
dropped from the display.

Grisoft has released the corrected update for the problem. It is ok to
go ahead and update if you haven't already.

If you have updated and are experiencing trouble you can do the
following in Safe Mode and then update in regular mode to correct it...

1. Download the latest AVG Free installation package from [free.grisoft.com]
2. Run the AVG Free install file
3. Choose the Repair option and follow the setup wizard
4. Restart your computer then update and test...

Good deal. I suspect I'll have my work cut out for me in the next couple
days.

My WinXP is fine too. The problem is just on my Win98SE box.

Mine got trashed. Win98SE. I removed AVG from the startup options and
still got the same error on starting. Error in AVGCORE.

I'm downloading the latest update now but it seems to be hanging.

Oh, good deal! The update Saturday seems to have solved the problem. I
booted up this morning with no problem, no BSOD...

Just checking computer activity in GoBack from 6:41 last evening when I did
my upgrade. It shows that the AVG update did in fact create, delete and
replace the following files.

Microavi.avg
Upd_Vers.cfg
Incavi.avm

Don't know if this is more than a definition update. It might be. But it
does seem to be causing problems.

It seems to be. Update again to the current version and everything
will return to normal.

Since installing the latest AVG update (last night) my Win98SE machine is
having shutting down problems.

I uninstalled and reloaded 7.0.323 yesterday and things seemed ok,
but after today's (18july) update I ran a full system check and it
hung checking through a large backup archive and wouldn't "stop".
Something(s) are still amiss.

July 20 ... just opened main AVG window and tried to change
scheduler settings, AVG crashed with an "illegal operation" error.
Anybody else still having problems under 98SE?
