Windows Defender vs. AVG 9.0

Jim Wood

I've been running AVG antivirus in parallel with Defender for some time
with no ill results. However, when I downloaded and installed AVG 9.0 the
other day, I saw that Defender had stopped. I restarted Defender manually,
but it stopped again. The prompted me to write the AVG folks and ask about
this situation.
According to AVG, their version 9.0 works differently than previous
versions, and is NOT compatible with Windows Defender. They recommended that
9.0 users permanently shut down Defender.
Is this a known issue with these two programs? Has anyone else had this
problem? What is the consensus among MVPs here about AVG's recommendation?

hi
in my Vista home basis 32 bit SP2
I had the same thing, w/ avg free 9
It comes with the FIREWALL
and Replaces Windows Defender, it turns off the build in Defender
and runs in its place
I could not download AVG 9 , With out the Firewall
so I installed Avast Home Edition free in 1 computer
and Avira AntiVir Personal free antivirus in the other

NOT an MVP, just a dump clicker

I downloaded avg9.0 yesterday, and am having same problem you are
experiencing with windows defender. I must turn it on 3 or 4 times before
defender will run, then it does not start when i reboot. I am also wondering
about avg's advise to shut down defender, anyone have any more light to shed?

This sounds like expected behavior to me--nothing to worry about.

If you trust AVG for anti-malware, then let them control these settings.

I have noticed the same problem. I guess the question is to trust AVG for
protection or not, since AVG made the upgrade knowing abuot the conflict or
get rid of AVG .

I am a computer numpty. I noticed the same problem after downloading AVG9. I
dont particularly want to change from AVG. What do the more experienced think
of closing down Defender and leaving it to AVG firewall?

Hi Jim

While AVG v9 installed I saw a message telling me to uninstall Zone Alarm. I
saw nothing about WinDef but agree that it's been stopped. v9 has a WebShield
but it does not appear configurable so I'm not keen on removing ZA.

Is this a plot to force everybody to use their total package.?

Bit of a backward step.

And the scanner has crashed my Vista PC every run except one so far!

I have AVG9 running on my laptop and there is no conflict there. I boot up
and defender is running just like before and I am running Vista there also,
so what is the difference Defender is Defender.

If you take a problem to a professional, you choose that person carefully,
and having chosen--take their advice.

If you trust AVG to provide your anti-malware protection, and their product
disables Windows Defender (and this is not an accident-- Microsoft provides
the mechanism for 3rd parties to do this, and AVG has implemented it)--then
I wouldn't worry about it further.
