Window defender MSASCui.exe stopped interacting with Windows

I keep getting the following error in the application event logs.

The program MSASCui.exe version 1.1.1600.0 stopped interacting with Windows
and was closed. To see if more information about the problem is available,
check the problem history in the Problem Reports and Solutions control panel.
Process ID: 1588 Start Time: 01cad07a91e18063 Termination Time: 12

This terminates windows defender and I must turn it on again.

I am running Windows vista home primium 64 bit with AVG FREE 9.0.791

You should not be using Windows Defender--AVG should disable it on
installation.

If you can open the Windows Defender UI, go to tools, options, scroll down
to the bottom and uncheck "Use...."

AVG includes antispyware functionality, and it is important not to have
multiple apps doing real-time scanning.

Many recent anti-virus programs include anti-spyware coverage, and thus (at
Microsoft's recommendation) disable Windows Defender.

AVG is one vendor which has done this in a recent release.
