MSASCui.exe Process from Windows Defender stays at 99% of CPU. Fre

Hi EveryBody,

This issue was also posted in "Windows One Care".

Hello Everyone,

I like Windows Defender (WD) and it works very well, though I liked the one
before "Windows Anti-Spyware" much better. I'm encountering some problems on
several PC's with (WD) where the processor is being used at 99% without ever
stopping untill it is done manually in the Task Manager (End Process).

"MSASCui.exe" Process from Windows Defender uses from 50% to 99% of CPU for
a long time, sometimes too long and at times uses the CPU leaving the
computer stalled from other uses. Basically the PC freezes from operations
until again, Ending the Process manually.

I understand that stopping the process stops (WD) and leaves the PC
vulnearable to the spyware etc,, right?

On Occassions, when the End Task of MSASCui.exe is done, then a svchost
takes over the CPU for that 99%

NOW! This is the part where I need recommendations from you guys and gals to
configure solutions to this problem...

Thanks,

Nelson

Ending the processes doesn't put you are risk as I believe that it will
immediately start again. The process does seem to go to 99% CPU when running
a full scan for some people. You'll find some other threads here on it and
also in the Windows Defender newsgroups. Hopefully this issue will be
resolved by the final release of Defender for XP.

Thanks for the Reply Steve,

For additional info with our problems, WD's process MSASCui.exe runs
consistently at 90% to 99% on it's own. No scan was being performed. My
clients are frustrated when they have to wait so long to take control of
their PC's if control is permitted.

Second, after the process is ended, it doesn't restart on it's own either.
Control is taken back, unless that other svchost that appears is that WD's is
starting over again...

This problem has been happening for the past 2 weeks. Maybe something in the
past 2 weeks in the updates? Well, if there's some other recommendation I'm
standing by at this moment checking this thread every 30 minutes for
solutions.

Ending the Process should in fact end real-time protection. Instead,
perhaps consider adjusting the affinity and or priority of this task within
task manager for the duration of that logon. However, I'd suspect
something far more serious is going on that machine, maybe a conflict with
another real-time anti-malware, perhaps from something like Symantec's
products which has been reported here, though usually in conjunction with a
Defender Scan (MsMpEng.exe), and I'd look for that kind of activity as a
source of conflict. You should be able to disable any such protection you
might have installed one at a time in order to observe the effect on
MSASCui. I rarely see little if any CPU activity from the MSASCui process.

Thanks for your Reply Dave,

The computer has PC Security Shield 2006/The Shield Firewall, rated 5.5
stars on PC World Magazine. It works better than the others. While Windows
Anti-Spyware was installed and upgraded to Windows Defender, it work fine as
well for months.

This problem began about 2 weeks ago, after several updates. I'm taking your
advice and checking the different processes one by one ending such processes
with the Anti-Virus.

If it confirms to be a conflict, then Windows Defender will be uninstalled
sending the result to Microsoft. Microsoft needs to know before sending us
the final Windows Defender product.

Thanks Again Dave and Take Care,

Nelson

Also check Windows Defender Automatic Scan settings. Do you have it set to
Scan automatically at a certain time AND to do a full system scan?

Again, Hello to one and all,

After doing a detailed analysis of the computer’s processes, testing them
for possible conflicts between “Real Time Protection†between the installed
Anti-Virus PC Security Shield Pro 2006 and Windows Defender (WD), I came to
the conclusion that Windows Defender had to have corrupted files somewhere,
since it (MSASCui.exe) was the only process giving us problems.

The basic solution was uninstall and reinstall however, I decided to begin
with the “Change†in Windows Defender-Add/Remove programs, Upgrade/Reinstall
within the same computer, Restart, wait several minutes, Restart/Wait about 5
more times and no problems within those 5 times and after.

The problem ceased and things are back to normal operating procedures. I
thank every one for their part and recommendations, especially “Dave M†from
Windows Defender Forum General Discussions.

Take Care and Thanks Again,

Nelson

Terrific that you got it resolved as easily as a reinstall. Thanks for
letting us know.

I too have this problem with MSASCui.exe. It runs at >90% of CPU in Task
Manager. I set it's priority to BelowNormal and the system now responds well
to all input. However the task or process never seems to end. Is the fix to
reinstall Windows Defender?

Hi MediMan;

If you're on the latest release of WD, and not running any other
Anti-Spyware with Real Time Protection activated, I think you should try a
Repair install as suggested by "MyComputerDoctorPR" If your backlevel then
you might just as well go to the WD download site and upgrade right over
your current install by downloading to the harddrive and then running the
install (disable any running Anti-Virus for the duration of the re-install
only). Make sure your current for Critical updates through the Windows
Update site before you do anything, WD is very particular about being up to
date.

Current WD version levels from About/Help:

Windows Defender Version: 1.1.1347.0

Engine Version: 1.1.1508.0

Once it's working correctly, reset your priority back to normal.

I agree with Dave's advice--go to Help, About, in windows defender and see
if the top number includes "1347" in the string. If it does, go to start,
control panel, add or remove programs, Windows Defender, change, update.

If it is a lower number, do a new download via www.microsoft.com (there's a
download link directly off that page at the lower right)--and run the
install--it'll go right over what is now in place.

Are your definitions current? One time I see this issue is when definitions
are updating--on some systems, that can be intensive.

Another time this may happen is if a full-scan is set for the scheduled
scan--and it is either the time for the scheduled scan, or a scan has been
missed, and one is taking place in the background some minutes after a user
login. If you open the Defender UI--that scan should be visible, in this
case.

I recommend setting scheduled scans to be quickscans--they are effective at
finding in-place malware, and much less resource intensive.

Hi MediMan,

Knowing that I continue to experiment with all my PC's, I decided to refresh
and Clean my Registry. So I decided to download this:

http://www.pcsecurityshield.com/webApp/41110.asp?trk=DTK&bid=208&aid=CD591&opt=

At first, I cleaned everything free, But I needed to do a complete workout
in the Registry, so I paid what they asked for and cleaned it Completely.

I have not had any problem since. For someone in my type of service, I
always have an Anti-Virus and Windows Defender works better than ever.

The last time I was in this thread was June 4, 2006 and today is the 27th of
July 2006, can't complain. The registry cleaner worked out the rest of the
bugs with the Defender.

Thanks guys,
The numbers indicated that the app and definitions were current. Auto
updates is enabled on this machine. The Repair install seems to have fixed
the problem.

Hello Everone,

I personally used these links for the Anti-Virus and the Registry cleaners I
have on my computers.

I have no idea why you're getting blocks of any kind. I have been using
these products for 2 years and everything continues to work excellent.

PC World magazine has rated these people at 5.5 stars while Norton, McAfee,
Panda and others only rated 4.0 stars and below. By personal experience with
up to 30 years in Information Technology I assure you that everything is in
good standing and reputation is excellent. I only recommend something if it
works.

I recommend you check WHY you're getting these blocks, especially when
competitors are the ones blocking another product? Think about it.

If you need reassurance, check with PC World Magazine and Verify my content.
If you need assistance with problems in your PC let me know and I'll
recommend something for FREE.

I checked Spyware warrior. Who are those people writing nasty information
about so many? Which one is true and false?

This confuses everyone who wants to better their PC's and I tend to believe
PC World Magazine way more. At least this magazine has a rep recognized world
wide.

I have knowledge in the PC business BUT millions do not. Some Web Sites that
anounce themselves, as if they're an authority confuse those without
knowledge and brings a lot of doubt to all. Everyday I learn something and
this thread is still teaching me something.

By the way, I'm also a Microsoft Registered Member and trained under
Microsoft education. I think I know a little bit of something, don't you
think?

I did has you suggested and it worked. Thanks a whole bunch. My registry had
so many problems everything worked crazy. My Windows Defender updates easiliy
now plus the other stuff works, which didn't well before this.

After cleaning the registry I did an update to Defender and scanned. It took
things out that id didn't before. My comp is working faster. I don't know a
lot about computers but if it works fast I'm a happy camper.

I did the links and had no problems. Better yet it fixed my defender problems
and my computer too works better.

I followed Compu Docs instructions and everything worked fine. These links
were ok, I didn't have problems with them and it helped my defender problems.
