Defender process won't exit during shutdown

I've been using Windows Defender beta2 for about a month now. Since
installing it I find that at least 50% of the time when I try to shutdown my
system (XP Home Edition, fully up-to-date) I get a pop-up message that
Defender's MSASCUI.exe process is not responding. I finally click the "End
now" button and then the shutdown completes.

Is this a bug in Defender? I never encountered any such problem in MS
Anti-Spyware beta1.

Hi Peter,

This is indeed a bug in the WinDefend UI - we've got a fix coded up and
tested, it will be shipped out with our next UI update.

Thanks for trying Windows Defender,
Joe

That was good news about a fix. However, I've just installed the latest
Defender beta, and the problem still occurs. Should it have been fixed in
this version? If not, how will I know when to look for the fix?

Windows Defender Version: 1.1.1347.0
Engine Version: 1.1.1372.0
Definition Version: 1.14.1402.2

Thanks
Peter

Peter, could you please email me at joefa at microsoft dot com with the
contents of the software explorer output for Windows Defender?

I'm also suspicious of the TRd ww: stuff, and would like to investigate with
your help.

Thanks,
Joe

This is exactly my problem also. I have not tried the aformentioned solution.
Should I?

Hi Carl,

Please do re-install WD from the MS download site, if you haven't already.
There's various fixes in there.

Total Recorder is sometimes causing WinDefend to hang on shutdown. I
believe disabling the total recorder scheduler will work around the issue,
but we're still investigating.

Your hang may be due to something else, if you suspect so, please follow up
with me.

Thanks,
Joe

Hi:

I use Total Recorder and got the shutdown problem when Windows Antispyware
updated to Windows Defender. I already had the TR scheduler disabled, so that
doesn't look like it would be a workaround for me. Also, uninstalling
Defender and reinstalling it did not get rid of the problem.

The solution for me was to uninstall TR completely and then install the
latest version of TR. This seems to have gotten rid of the shutdown problem.
I did not test to see if uninstalling the older version of TR and
reinstalling the same old version would have worked. It's worth a try if for
some reason you don't want to upgrade TR (it's a free upgrade for registered
users).

Hope this helps.

I confirm that I too was previously using Total Recorder (v5.3 Standard
Edition) with its scheduler disabled, and that upgrading to Total Recorder's
new release (v6.0) fixed the problem where Windows Defender would not shut
down properly.

My thanks too to Joe Faulhaber for his helpful email assistance in
investigating this problem.

I'm not using Total Recorder, and I am also having an issue with Defender
hanging up when I shutdown. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling it, but I
have the same problem.
