ZoneAlarm and AVG cause "Shut Down" to Fail

S

After I installed the latest versions of Free Zone Alarm and Free AVG
antivirus on my WinXP
Home PC and tried to shut down, the PC hung on the blue "shutting down"
screen and had to be turned off and turned back on again.

Zone Alarm running by itself also caused a hang, until I followed the
advice offered on Zone
lab's web site, which suggested deleting several files in the "internet
logs" directory.
After that, ZA did NOTcause a hang when it was running by itself.
AVG antivirus does not seem to cause the hang when it is running by
itself either. Only
when the two are running together.

So what should I do? I really need both of these programs to work on
my PC, for obvious reasons.
My PC has a Pentium 4, 3.2GHZ and 1GB of RAM.
Does anybody know why this is happening and how to fix it? Please let
me know. Thanks.

No idea on that particular problem, but sometimes certain combo's of
programs don't work well together. I had a problem running Outpost with
AVG, the AVG tray icons disappeared, but when I removed Outpost and used
another firewall, all was well. Who knows the cause. Sometimes you
just have to try out various firewalls and AVs until you get two that
work well together.

I had the same problem on two similar PCs, and I "solved them" by
using the pay version of Zonelab. ... Well this is not my suggested
remedy for this conflict, it simply proves that there is some problem
with the free version and Zonelab might hopefully solve that some fine
day..

Get Sygate Personal Firewall and Avast Anti-virus.
I left the same as you had and have never looked
back. From what I have seen Sygate beats Free
Zone Alarm all the way. I used Zone Alarm over
five years before I started having problems. Try
them. You won't be disappointed.

What about Trend Micro PC Cillin Firewall and Antivirus? That got good
reviews in the PC mags also.

But if it works, I'd say it has a definite advantage over the freeware,
wouldn't you?

But;

The idea in alt.comp.*freeware* is to discuss items related
to...freeware. Since people are having problems w/ZA & AVG, we are
trying to sort them out, in context.

We know there are payware options to most, if not all, of the topics
raised here. The point is, the payware suggestion is off-topic and,
more importantly, we are trouble-shooting a freeware issue which is
/definitely/ on-topic.

I have 5 computers in my house using avg and zonealarm together without
any problems. I recently changed one to antivir but will probably try
avast on it next just to compare.

I they Win XP Home PC's? And are they the latest versions of both
programs?
some are xp home and some are xp pro and all latest versions, I update
as soon as they are available. But I have been using them together for a
long time, like a few years.

In that case, my problem is mystifying, isn't it?
Why would these programs cause a shutdown problem for me but not for
you?

You have SP2 installed as well I suppose?

I have avg and za installed together on my 2K. Everything works well.
Maybe it's the order they are installed in... my avg activates before za
when starting up.

If order is the problem, it seems to me that that simply indicates a
general quirkiness with the programs. The best solution probably would
be to just use 2 different programs. I just downloaded AntiVir (which
got better reviews than AVG anyway) and the Kerio Firewall. So I will
try them and see if they give me any problems.
