Laptop that crashed

I bought a laptop without any discs.. so when it crashed I was hoping to put
Windows Xp on it... I purchase the upgrade but was informed it might now work
with the computer ... I used one of my other XP cds to put the software on
and now would like to register it with the Upgrade. Will this work or will I
be out $100 if I try this? I tried to purchase just another license but was
unable to get through at this time due to site problems I guess? What would
be the best way to get this laptop up and running again? Thank you for your
help.

It really depends as to why your laptop crashed, and whether you have a
qualifying version of a win cd to upgrade with

I don't really recall what happened when it crashed.. It might have been
something simple but don't really recall.. the xp I put on the laptop is
working great except for the fact I have only 30days to register it... I am
not sure how an upgrade works so thought maybe all I needed was the license?
Is that what the upgrade will give me or am I going down the wrong path? I
was hoping to get this up and running for my nephew for xmas.. any help would
be greatly appreciated..

If you are saying you purchased an upgrade edition of win and this is now
installed on the Laptop, and is functioning, then you are fine to activate
it.
Be aware if you ever need to clean install, you will need an old version of
win to pop in the cd during the installation process of the upgrade. It is
not neccessary to have the qualifying version installed in order to upgrade.
Only a single winxp cd can be installed on a single PC (at any one time)

what I am saying is I bought the upgrade but the guy scared me that it might
now work and I would be out of $100... so I took my xp cd that I have and
tried that first to see if the laptop would even work after installing
xp...it is working and working great.. Now I just want to license it so that
it is registered and legal!! what I don't understand is if I open the upgrade
up and use that license, will that work? I just am really scared to open
that box (the upgrade) try it and it not work and be out $100... I have two
computers that I had bought that are both xp home edition.. so I have two xp
home edition cds and two licensed computers with them on.. I just want
another license for my laptop... will the upgrade work and do that for me?

Any version of win is licensed to a single working installation.
If you have two working PC's with two winxp cd's, you can (with certain
assumptions) use one of the cd's to install win on another sys. You will
however not be able to activate it unless you uninstall/scrap one of the
origonal PC's

If you purchased an Upgrade version of winxp, provided you have a qualifying
version win, you can use this to install on this new Laptop.

You *may* be able to use your upgrade cd key to activate the current laptop
installation.
Amongst other things it would depend on the upgrade version, and the version
you installed.

If you cannot do this, you need to find a qualifying version of win, then do
a clean installation with the upgrade cd

ok... so do you think I have a good chance that my upgrade should work? Or??
I just want an honest opinion if the cd key should work or not... I keep
thinking that is all I need... Just was hoping some one could take some of
the fear out of trying this. Thanks

If its a genuine retail win upgrade cd and you have a qualifying version of
win then there is no reason for it not working.
