Laptop for Photo Editing

Video card is unimportant for photoediting. Color accuracy
of the screen and the contrast might be, as might what kind
of coating (reflective or not, can also depend on
anticipated ambient lighting) on the screen. Processor is
directly comparable as a prominent line-item when choosing
one.

Since I don't know which laptops currently have the best
screen I suggest you go to a local store and look at a few,
and take some time to try to readjust the screen in the
display properties since they're not likely to be well
calibrated yet. Then if you find a line that has a good
screen, you can compare prices online and perhaps find other
models or variations of that chassis with same screen but
different configurations for processor, memory, etc.

There is a generation of LCD displays with LED backlights coming. I
don't know if any Photoshop professionals have reviewed these or not.
The gamut is supposed to be better. It is unclear to me whether this
will result in a more reliable display or not - while an individual LED
beats the CCFL/inverter on current displays, these displays will use
many LEDs, and if any single LED fails, the display will be affected.

Processor won't be too much of an issue - anything fairly recent will cope
just fine. Make sure you get as much RAM as you can afford - I would
recommend at least 2GB for serious photo editing. You will need to consider
backup as well - a decent DVD writers should be in the package.

The big problem is going to be the colour accuracy of the LCD screen. You
can buy screen calibrators that attach to the top of CRT-based screens and
allow you to correct the colour accuracy of a monitor, but I don't know if
would work for LCD screens - trouble with LCD is that if you move your head
too far from the perpendicular, the colours change.

Most modern video cards are good enough for photo editing. The important
thing is the program you use and to understand what these graphics
programs can do. What program to get depends on how sophisticated your
editing is going to be. To do real sophisticated editing you need a
program like Photo Shop but to do simple editing you can use a free
program like Irfan View or Image Forge or the ones that come with
cameras or scanners.
