laptop cannot hibernate

I have been having problems in the last few days (it all started happening
when an erronous windows update tried to install itself and failed). There
was a problem with ntoskrnl.exe, and I was able to replace that and that part
of the problem is now fixed, however I am still left with two problems:

My laptop cannot hibernate (standby button is inactive in the shutdown menu,
keyboard shortcuts do nothing, there is no hibernate option in the Power
setup menu).

Also, I am unable to perform system restore (I thought this might resolve
the above two problems).

Help please.

To repair all system files, go to Start/Run, and type (or paste in): SFC /SCANNOW

I managed to get the computer to boot from the disk, and it's been booting
again, but the hibernation problem persists.
