Is there any reason why my server (Windows 2000) should not be able to ping
a laptop - or vice versa - even though the laptop accepted DHCP settings
from the server and they can both ping other computers in the network

When you try to ping are you using the IP of the machine
or using the netbios name? If you use the netbios name it
could be an issue with WINS or DNS not having the proper
registration of the name to the IP. You could although
rare have a MAC conflict where you have 2 network cards
with the same MAC address. I had that happen once and it
was a bear to figure out but maybe this will give you some
things to check.
