a friends laptop can't ping anything except 127.0.0.1 it can't even ping
its own IP address. i have uninstalled and reinstalled the network adapter
but still nothing. it seems to not be able to pickup an IP from the DHCP
server either. i know the DHCP server is configured properly cuz all the
other computers are connected without any problems. i am able to statically
set an IP. i have tried pinging the laptop from another computer but
without success. i cant remember if the laptop can ping the gateway or not.
any suggestions or ideas?

Possible LSP/Winsock corruption.

http://support.microsoft.com/?id=811259

If XP SP2, Start - Run - "cmd". Type "netsh winsock reset catalog" into the
command window.

Give LSP-Fix <http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm>, WinsockFix
<http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=257>, or WinsockXPFix
<http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html> a shot.

If no help yet, reset TCP/IP.

Start - Run - "cmd". Type "netsh int ip reset c:\netsh.txt" into the command
window.

laptop is running SP1 so I was unable to run the SP2 command. I was able to
run the "netsh int ip reset c:\netsh.txt" command but this did not fix the
problem. I also checked to see if there was a firewall running in Windows
and it appeared to not be running or enabled. there are 3 network
connections: wireless, 1394 connection and local area connection 3. i tried
disabling the wireless and the 1394 but this did not help. ipconfig /renew
does not work. the error is An error occured while renewing interface Local
Area Connection 3: An operation was attempted on something that is not a
socket. She did have AOL ISP installed but I have tried uninstalling this
and it seems to be gone for the most part. She also had Norton Anit-Virus.
I cannot ping the gateway with the laptop. When the laptop is set to get an
IP from the DHCP ...windows just gives it one of the 169.x.x.x IPs. but yet
it says its connected at 100mb and has been connected for 7minutes
30seconds. still can't ping or access the Internet. any ideas?

If you don't have XP SP2, so can't use "netsh winsock reset catalog", use
LSP-Fix <http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm>, WinsockFix
<http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=257>, or WinsockXPFix
<http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html>. Your symptoms, including
"An operation was attempted on something that is not a socket." is in keeping
with LSP / Winsock corruption. Winsock corruption is not fixed by the TCP/IP
reset.
