Wireless networking problem - ping works one way only

I'm hoping someone might be able to help with this problem...

I'm trying to set up a wireless network for my laptop (Dell Inspiron 1300
running XP Home SP2) and my desktop PC (generic, also running XP Home SP2).
I've got a SafeCom SWBAR-5400 router, which is linked by ethernet cable to
the desktop.

I started by setting up a fully wired network, using a cable from the laptop
to the router. All was fine - shares worked in both directions, and both
computers accessed the internet ok (through a cable modem attached to the
router). But now that I've changed over to the wireless connection, I can't
ping the laptop from the desktop by name any more; and almost never by IP
address (the laptop replies to about one packet in eight). It all works fine
in the other direction: I can ping reliably from laptop to desktop, and
access files on the desktop. Internet access from both computers is still ok,
if a bit slow from the laptop.

I've tried some of the fixes mentioned in this newsgroup and elsewhere, but
without success. If anyone's got any suggestions, I'd be grateful.

I'll include ipconfig outputs below. First is the laptop ("Inspiron"). Next
is the desktop ("Prx").

Caolas,

Are the Intel drivers on Inspiron up to date? I'd start by checking that.
Then, I'd look at LSP / Winsock corruption.

Thanks for the suggestions. I've reinstalled the Intel driver and worked
through the Winsock repair options on the Inspiron (laptop), but no luck. Got
to go to bed now, but are there any other diagnostics it would be worth my
trying tomorrow?

Thanks again.

Go thru my article discussing the limitation of WiFi. Improve the WiFi signal.

Use PingPlotter on both computers, pinging the other, and chart ping results
both ways. Do a site survey using NetStumbler. Find a better channel. Run
PingPlotter on both computers, for each WiFi channel used.

Thanks. I tried Netstumbler and Pingplotter and couldn't see anything
unexpected. But I've now solved the problem: it turns out there is a new
firmware available for my Safecom router (hadn't thought of that) that's been
brought out to solve a known compatibility problem with Intel wireless cards.
Installed it last night and all is well.

Thanks again for your help.

Firmware upgrades are always a good place to start. Thanks for letting us know.
