Server can't ping client computers

A wierd thing just happened to our server. The server shut itself down last
night. When I started it up again the next morning the users could access
everything on the server but the server could not ping any of the clients.
DHCP is running fine and if I try to ping a client and look at the hub I see
the correct light for that computer blink with the server as if they are
communicating. Also, the correct IP addresses are showing up in DHCP. I
can't remote access the client computers or manage them. Any suggestions?

Thank you.

Are you pinging the client by name or IP address? If it works for IP
address, then it sounds like a DNS problem.

Can you ping server's own IP address? Can you ping 127.0.0.1 ?

Hmmmmmmmmmm Almost sounds like a firewall problem.... Does the server or
the clients have firewalls installed? If yes, I'd try turning it off as
a test. It's common for firewalls to block ICMP traffic which prevents
pinging the machine.... (the WinXP SP2 firewall does this)

Odd that this has never happened before and only started when the server shut
itself down. I have rebooted the server many times before without having
this issue.
