Elinor;
If you do not have the Critical Updates including Service Packs, it is
not "perfectly good working machine".
Just because you have been fortunate and nothing noticeable has
appeared to you does not mean your computer is "perfectly good working
machine".
Do you also wait to change the oil on your automobile after the engine
clanking starts?
Or do you service a "perfectly good working machine"?
Have you tried Last Known Good Configuration at the same menu as Safe
Mode?
If that also fails, perform a Repair Installation:

Then see this link before installing a Service Pack to help eliminate
issues before they start:

I loaded SP1 and rebooted and now I can't even boot in safe mode. It
just gets to the windows XP loading screen and just reboots itself
again and again and again.
Remind me again why I should load a perfectly good working machine
with something that is designed to make the machine work better but
actually makes it not work at all?
