Junk Senders not working

B

Brent Yager

When I look at my Junk Senders list, I see nothing but
those senders I added to the list personally; however,
there's a Junk Senders.txt file that has a TON of junk
senders ... but they don't show up in my list. Why is
that?

I've tried "importing" it, and Outlook just hangs for
hours (in fact, I've ran it all night with no success).

Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I get over 100
emails a day. If there's anything I can do, please let
me know.

Thank you,
Brent

Hi Brent,

Thank you for the posting. As you indicated in the Junk Senders list, you
only see those senders you added to the list personally; however, there's a
Junk Senders.txt file that has many junk senders but they don't show up in
the list.

When you add e-mail addresses to the Junk Senders list, Junk Senders.txt is
created to store these entries. Adult Content Senders.txt is the file that
stores the entries added to the Adult Content list.

Regarding this issue, we suggest you import the Junk Senders.txt file. If
you cannot do so in Normail Mode, you can do so in Outlook Safe Mode using
"outlook /safe" command.

1. Run "outlook /safe" command to open Outlook in Safe Mode.
2. Click "Tools", and then click "Options".
3. On the "Preferences" tab, in the "E-mail" box, click "Junk E-mail".
4. Click the "Blocked Senders" tab, and then click "Import from file".
5. In the "Import Blocked senders" dialog box, expand C:\Documents and
Settings\<Your_Username>\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook
6. Click "Junk Senders.txt", and then click "Open". All entries in the Junk
Senders file you have selected will be imported.
7. Click "Apply", and then click "OK" two times.

If you still cannot import correctly, you may need to manually add a
message to the Junk E-mail list, follow these steps:

1. Click to open the message.
2. On the Actions menu, point to Junk E-mail and click "Add to Junk Senders
list" or "Add to Adult Content Senders List."
-or-
3. Right-click the message.
4. Point to Junk E-mail and then click "Add to Junk Senders list" or "Add
to Adult Content Senders List."

To Update the List of Unwanted E-mail Senders
1. From the Inbox folder, on the Tools menu, click Organize.
2. Click Junk E-Mail.
3. Scroll to the bottom of the Organizer window and then click Click Here.
4. To change the commercial e-mail list, click Edit Junk Senders.
5. To change the Adult Content list, click Edit Adult Content Senders.

Outlook adds the sender of the e-mail to the selected list and takes the
specified action to either move or color-code the message.

If the above steps still does not work, we are providing you with the
following two methods:

Create customized message rules to filter the messages
==================================================

In addition to using the built-in Outlook filters, you can create custom
rules to filter out specific types of unwanted messages. Custom rules
include additional words or phases that are not included in the Filters.txt
file. Just as with the built-in feature, you can specify that the rules you
create move messages from your Inbox to the junk e-mail folder, to your
Deleted Items folder, or to any other folder you specify.

To create custom rules: On the Tools menu, click Rules Wizard, and then
follow the instructions on your screen.

Create and run the macro in Outlook 2002
===================================

As for the detailed information and step-by-step procedure to do so, please
refer to this web site:
http://office.microsoft.com/assistance/2002/articles/pwDeleteSenders.aspx

Hope the above information and suggestion helps and answers your question.
If anything is unclear, please let me know.

Sincerely,

Cherry -
Thanks a ton for the informative response! I was able to
successfully import my Junk Senders.txt file on my home
machine, but it took all night (over 6 hours, at least)
and it tied my machine up almost exclusively to import a
simple 300K file (not your fault, I'm just informing
ya).

Now the names are in there, and it seems to be filtering
better, but now I've encountered a new problem - when I
right+click on a Junk email and attempt to add it to the
Junk Sender's list, my machine hangs again. After 1/2
hour, I had to kill Outlook and restart ... vowing to not
add a sender to the list until I get a fix. It's too
bad, too, because I do want to do this.

For the record, my PC is configured as follows: Windows
XP Professional, Office 2K3 beta. My PC is a Dell
Dimension PIII/866MHz with 512K RAM. Nothing is bogging
my machine down more than the Outlook import ... that is,
when I perform it.

Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated. In
addition, any help I can provide I'd be glad to do so.

Brent

Hi Brent,

Thank you for the posting again. I am glad to hear you have imported the
Jnk Senders.txt correctly.

As you indicated when you attempt to add it to the Junk Sender's list, the
machine hangs again. Based on your description as well as our research and
expereince, this can be related to the background programs cause some
conflict or consume system resources. Regarding this issue, we are
providing you with the following troubleshooting steps.

Suggetion one: Clean Boot
========================

1. Click Start, click Run, type msconfig in the open box.
2. Click Startup tab.
3. Clear all the checks in the Startup list.
4. Click System Services tab.
5. Click to check Hide All Microsoft Services.
6. Clear all the remaining non-Microsoft services in the list.
7. Click OK to restart your computer.
8. Test to see if the issue recurs in this condition.

Suggestion two: Outlook Safe Mode
==============================

Click Start, Run, type the following command in the open box, click OK.

outlook /safe

This will open Outlook in Safe Mode. Test to see if the issue recurs in
this condition.

Hope the above information and suggestion helps and answers your question.
If anything is unclear, please let me know.

Sincerely,

Darn it! I tried importing via Safe mode and Outlook sat
for over 1/2 hour! I killed it and restarted because I
needed it for work this morning, but will let it go
overnight if you want me to try. It's just strange,
either way, because a ~300K file should import in a
couple of minutes.

Note that I'm attempting this on my laptop, which exceeds
my home PC in power (Dell Latitude 1.2GHz, 512K RAM,
Windows XP Pro, ...).

Let me know what you think.

Thanks,
Brent

Hi Brent,

Thank you for the posting again. As you indicated you tried importing via
Safe mode and Outlook hangs again.

In order to verify this issue, we suggest you try the following method

Method one: Clean Boot
======================

This is to verify whether there is any program running at the background
resutls in the freeze.

8. Test to import the in this condition to see if it is successful.

Method two: New Profile
=====================

This is to verify whether there is any damage in the original email profile
in Outlook.

If it is Outlook 2002 or 2000 CW mode, Create a new profile to test to
import again.

As for more information and detailed steps to do so, please refer to this
knowledge base article:

Q287072 OL2002: How to Create a New E-mail Profile for Outlook

http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q287/0/72.asp

If still freezes in the above two methods, the most possible reason is some
of the entry in the Junk Senders.txt is damaged or corrupted so that
Outlook cannot handle it smoothly as usual.

Hope the above information and suggestion helps and answers your question.
If anything is unclear or if there is anything further we can help you with
from our side, please let me know.

Sincerely,
