iTunes 7.6.x: Can't find, delete or Last Played custom genre non-DRMsongs

Since upgrading from iTunes 4.9 to iTunes 7.6, I have been unable to
seach for or delete songs in my Music folder, or in any Playlist,
that
uses a custom genre.

These are non-Digital Rights Management songs (like free podcasts and
CD rips). I can view the songs in their custom smart playlist
folders,
I can play them in iTunes and on my iPod, but I cannot find them in
the iTunes Spotlight search, I cannot delete them in any view, and
they do not show a "Last Played" date even when I know they have been
played and other, non-custom genre files show a Last Played date.

None of these problems existed before upgrading (I didn't want to
upgrade from 4.9, but Apple forced me to do it to regain access to my
purchased songs).

I have an iPod mini and I keep all my songs on my iPod (with the
exception of purchased DRM songs downloaded from iTunes store, which
are in a folder on my computer). Windows XP SP2

Any ideas how I can force iTunes 7.6.x to treat my custom genre songs
like any other non-DRM song and allow search, deletion and play
history?

Thanks.
