Archiving problems between Windows and iTunes

Hi, folks. This is my first post to a MS newsgroup.
I'm using iTunes on a Dell Dimension E510 with WindowsXP Media Center
Edition. I have a 160-gig external hard drive (Western Digital) attached by
USB.

To back up my collection (nearly 2,000 songs) I create a playlist within
iTunes containing my whole library and then drag the songs into the external
hard drive icon on the desktop.

While the songs are transfering, I get 12 prompts that a file (with a number
first and then the name of the song as an mp4 file) already exists; I'm only
given the option of overwriting the existing file or proceeding without
saving this so-called duplicate file.

In the end, those 12 songs disappear from the external hard drive; I'm
unable to back them up.

This appears to be a conflict between archiving styles on the iTunes system
and in a Windows computer.

Any idea what can I do to rectify this?

Sounds like a similar problem I had with my digital camera.. The Pictures
were always being numbered the same by the camera.. I just copied the folders
the camera created, to a new folder I created and named it appropriately..
That way I was able to edit and or tweak the pictures in MGI's Photo suite
app. Then I just returned the images to the original camera created folders,
added the folders to the camera via an empty memory stick, to show them off
to Friends.. You may need to just create a new folder so you don't have to
change the numerical name/value of the file, so you can load them back
later..You should be able to mix and match songs from differing folders as
long as they are still in numerical order. You may need to experiment a
little..
It may work the same..?

I guess I'm still not sure how to separate files without going through and
selecting songs in some random manner that still might not stop duplicate
files from being overwritten or discarded.

Never mind, folks. I talked to tech support and the solution is to save the
files onto the external hard drive direcrly from the library that iTunes
creates on my PC hard drive. All settled!
