its amazing how rude you guys are...

i have been reading this newsgroup, and i am amazed at how rude you guys
are. i have seen you people give the rudest response, like, why dont you try
a win98 newsgroup, cuz this ones for xp, as it says in the title. well, why
not give him a link to the newsgroup? personally, i think Microsoft could
organise their groups a bit better. and another thing, i have seen like 4
posts saying the exact same thing to the person. why not read all posts
before replying? people are here to be helped, not be treated rudely. so why
not be nice and actually help them?

Well, I suppose it's because everyone here assumes anyone using a computer
has a bit of common sence and wouldn't go to an XP group with a Windows 95
problem. It's fairly easy to search and read titles of newsgroups having
some idea of what they are about because of the title.

Would you take your Buick (or other GM vehicle) to the Ford dealership to
get parts? Would you expect Mr. Goodwrench to then take you by the hand and
lead you to Ford?

As to multiple replies, most people complain because they don't GET a reply
as fast as they think they want one. This is all volunteers, attempting to
help those who need and ask for help. We don't do individual emails, this
is a group where everyone gets informed by reading the posts. If 4 people
give the same answer, perhaps they all answered about the same time...it's
next to impossible to read everything here.

If you want to start responding, and treating ppl differently, feel free.

Have a nice holiday.

You have to have a thick skin, to hang out in the newsgroups, that's for
sure! I've been guilty of what you observe, myself. I think it comes from
years, and years, of reading, and responding, to the same issues, over, and
over. You want to help, you try to help, but sometimes its overwhelming. I
guess we forget when we were learning, and sometimes assume everyone started
when we did, and should now know what we know. Keep in mind, no one gets
paid for offering advice, or help, in these groups. Sometimes users act
like we owe them an explanation, or we have to solve their problems, or
else! And to be honest, sometimes people are just plain lazy, and don't
even try to resolve a problem themselves. Then my favorite is when you try
to help them, give them good, accurate advice, and they argue with you, and
tell you they know better! If we don't have the answer, THEY get rude, and
irate. So it's a give, and take, environment.

There are of course those who just lurk in the groups, to make fun of,
belittle, and embarrass, newbie's. That isn't right.

Happy Holidays!

In defence of those who post replies that have already been supplied by
others, it's likely an issue related to news servers. Some are faster
than others, and so while you may see four or five replies, another guy,
with a slower news service, may see none.

As for rudeness, it may just be terseness or the difficulty in
differentiating in print, a gently delivered suggestion from a harshly
delivered demand.

Well, the Usenet system is setup into specific groups based on the
NuesGroup Name - an XP group would be for asking XP questions, a
comp.security.firewalls group would be for asking questions about
firewalls, a Linux.Redhat group would NOT be for asking questions about
SUSE Linux. It's very easy to understand the structure, and if people
took half the time they do to setup their DVD player, you would not be
posting what you've posted.
organise their groups a bit better. and another thing, i have seen like 4

Usenet exists as groups of interconnected servers, all over the world,
with different update times. Some servers update in real-time, some are
polled every X minutes, some groups are only updated when the Moderator
passes the post through....Some people using Usenet think it's like
email, and don't bother to try and understand it BEFORE they start using
it. As an example, when I post this I know that it could be several
seconds (any possibly) minutes before I can re-fetch the group and see
my own post, but, some people figure that since they didn't see it as
soon as they hit send, that it didn't post, so they send again.

before replying? people are here to be helped, not be treated rudely. so why
not be nice and actually help them?

Since the late 80's Usenet has been a place where people can talk
subjects based on the group they are reading/posting in. Some people get
tired of posting the same response to the same question answered already
a 10000000 times, but that's not a excuse, it's a maturity problem. I
was always told that if you don't have something good to say, then keep
your mouth shut, but the younger generation is rather snotty, so you get
people being rude or not helping with in reality it would have taken the
same amount of effort to just properly reply.

Then you have trolls, people that post to groups to get attention since
no one loves them. Trolls are mostly idiotic people that have no life
and are very easy to spot, the good ones, the "educated" trolls are
often hard to spot and can keep a good group of people going for
days/posts.

Who know, maybe one of the rude posters will read your post and decide
that they should remember to not post unless they can word it nicely or
not at all.

Hello Rafiki;
In case you did not know, I take the liberty of pointing out that it is rude
NOT to use the shift-key on your keyboard. I know it is fashionable in some
circles to disable the shift key. In this Newsgroup it is bad manners.
Multum in parvo.

Merry Christmas

I agree entirely. politeness costs nothing

There are no "you guys" here. There are only individuals. And as
in any group of individuals, some are polite, some are rude, and
some are in-between. Please don't paint us all with the same
brush.

and another thing, i have seen like 4 posts saying the exact
same thing to the person. why not read all posts before
replying?

Individuals will often give a response similar or identical to
what others have already said, for a variety of reasons, mostly
good:

1. Not everyone uses the same news server, and messages are
propagated to different servers at different times. A message
that's available on your server may not be available on
everyone's server, so some people may not yet have seen the other
messages with the same answer.

2. Messages are usually downloaded in batches. Even if the
message is available on someone's server, it may not have yet
been downloaded to his computer. Again, some people may not yet
have seen the other messages with the same answer.

3. Someone may answer a question with what seems to you like the
same answer, but was meant to make an additional point, give a
somewhat different stress to a particular point, or to explain a
particular point in a better way.

4. Someone may answer a question with the same answer to lend
weight to a particular opinion.

5. Someone may, either through carelessness or haste, not realize
that a question has already been answered.

It hardly ever hurts to get the answer more than once, and often
helps. If I want to know something, and four people tell it to
me, I'm a lot more likely to believe it than if only one does.

".... you guys...." How about "you gals" too? Leaving out one of the
sexes is very rude not to mention chauvinistic. The fairer sex can be
as ruder or ruder, possibly even the rudiest.

It is very rude of you to lump us all together as rude.

Often people answer before their computer has downloaded the previous
replies.

It is much more than politeness. Cognitively, the eye scans sentences
looking for makers to chunk the sentences into parts. One of the markers is
capitalization, others are punctuation.

It is very much less efficient and more difficult to read the posts that are
caps off. Further, it is the ultimate in rudness, thus an irony in this OP
case.
