You guys enjoy deleting posts don't you...

You ppl need a place to put topics about the newsgroup
itself...
You're most likely gonna delete this too in about 5
minutes...but hey, ur M$, I'm not gonna hate you for
that...I have enough reasons to already.
I just made a post an hour or two ago about how your
windows xp install screwed up my linux install. I come back
to see if anyone's said anything, and it's been deleted.
And this is not the first time this has happened to me...it
happens a lot. What, do you just delete any posts about
stuff you don't want people to hear? You saw a post saying
your install program caused problems and figure if you
delete the post the problem doesn't exist???
Whatever...like I said, I won't hate you for this...I got
enough reasons to do that anyways...

You mean -- "What's install do before you format?!?"
"What exactly does the windows XP install CD do between the
time you insert the disc and boot it up, and the time it
gets to the drive format step??? The way I always
understood it was nothing, but apparently it does SOMETHING
because during that time it eliminated my bootloader and
destroyed my install of Linux. I did not tell the install
to do anything. I got to the format step and canceled. And
yet it still screwed up my computer. What the hell?!? I
swear...as soon as I get my own comp I'm done with windoze
forever...too hard to keep it working and prevent it from
totally destroying every single byte of data..."

I think it's your computer. If it deleted your Linux installation, it's
fully capable of deleting your newsgroup posts.

Your computer hates you.

Do not ever install Windows onto a computer with another OS on it.

Windows does not recognize that any other OS exists.

Whenever I install Windows on a computer that will
have another OS on it, I unplug the other hard drives until
after Windows is installed. Then I plug the other drives
back in and install or modify the other OS.

If you are installing Windows and another OS on one
hard drive, install Windows first. Then install the other
OSes.

There may be other ways to do it, but these are the only
ways I have found safe.

Again, Windows does not recognize that any other OS exists.

Hope this helps.

I seriously suggest you learn how to use a News Client such as Outlook Express or Netscape
Messenger and access the News Server directly rather than access the News Groups via the MS
CDO Web Based front-end !

Your ISP's news server might be having some difficulty with the microsoft.*
hierarchy just like my ISP. Notice that many of the threads begin with a
'RE:' indicating that artcles are missing? So I use the
msnews.microsoft.com news server for these newsgroups.

I use SCSI. Each hard disk has a different OS installed. Through the BIOS of the Adaptec
SCSI controller's hotkey sequence, you can select which SCSI ID you want to boot from. This
way you can choose which OS you want to boot. When you install a NEW OS on a hard disk, you
just disconnect the power cable(s) to the other drives and make the destination drive the
boot drive. This way the installing OS does NOT see the other OS's and there is ZERO
interaction between the OS's.

I been on UseNet for a long, long, time and I hate web based front-ends. They just don't
compare.

Besides the News Server from Microsoft and the one supplied by your ISP, many hardware and
software companies have their own private News servers. Examples are; Adobe and Veritas.

News Readers/Clients are the *best* way to access News Groups. The capabilities and
usability comes from what News Reader/Client you use. there are many.

The next time you have the Grub boot manager working with both OS's, copy
the bootsector to a diskette with the command: dd if=/dev/sda of=/dev/fd0
bs=512 count=1. Replace 'sda' with whatever device your own hard drive
uses.

Then after reinstalling XP just boot off the diskette into linux, and
restore the Grub boot manager to the hard drive bootsector with: dd
if=/dev/fd0 of=/dev/sda bs=512 count=1

Try using a proper newsreader. I also doubt very much that
you even could configure Linux if you don't even know how
to us a newsreader in Windows.

I have come to the conclusion that duel boot systems are a pain in the
whatever. One has to reboot to change the OS so why not do the
simple thing and use HDD slide out trays. This goes right along with
my outlook on partitioned drives also. Nothing but trouble somewhere
down the line.

I have a system that has 2 drives with Windows ME and Suse 9.0, and a
a removable tray that can do Windows 98SE, Windows 95, and
MSDOS 6.22/Windows for Workgroups 3.11. Is it more trouble
than a system with only one OS, yes. Is it also more fun to play with,
you bet your ass. I am not at all worried about PITA arguments.

Of course I also use the Hercules IBM System 360/370/390 emulator to run
DOS/VS, VM370, and MVS 3.8j at the same time, so I can see the
usefulness of solutions like VMware and PC on a MAC.

That's another great idea!

JDR Microdevices sells IDE cages to swap drives in and out at very reasonable costs.
