Is there no end to computer troubles

I have recently as you see been through the mill and not everything
has been posted here. I sometimes do things all by myself. :)

A week or so ago I did just that. The computer would not go past the
first Intel Flash screen. Waited 3 minutes or more and still no
change.

Made use of the switch at the back and it was up running again. It has
now happened every 5-6 time when I either reboot or boot early in the
morning.

Just now it will not work at all. I still get the joy of the Intel
screen but that is not all I want - what say you - motherboard or
what.
While I have been writing this the computer has been off at the main
switch and I am about the switch on and time it - it did come on but
that was a 10 minute wait at completely off - what do you suggest,
please.

Not much to go on but check Event Viewer for errors. When you view the
logged events in Event Viewer (double-click them in the right-hand pane) in
the upper right corner, third button down is a copy to clipboard, then you
can paste in the body of a reply message.

Please do so for each of the different System Log events (that are a Type:
'Error' or 'Warning') since last boot so we can see all of the event detail.

Also check Device Manager for error codes and or non-starting devices.

Indeed not much to go on but then I did not expect that as the computer does not
seem to go past POST. This morning it started even after the power switch had
been left on, the way I usually treat the computer. We have had some very hot
days but yesterday was an exception and even called for a jumper and that was
the worst day I have had for that fault. Usually leaving the power off for 10-20
seconds cures the trouble but as I mentioned it did not do so yesterday but it
came to life after I had used the other computer to write the post.

The event viewer did not show anything to help us but Dr. Watson had sprung into
use but it was neither a warning nor an error:

Event Type: Information
Event Source: DrWatson
Event Category: None
Event ID: 4097
Date: 2006-02-16
Time: 9:32:17 PM
User: N/A
Computer: HOME1
Description:
The application, iexplore.exe, generated an application error The error occurred
on 02/16/2006 @ 21:32:17.531 The exception generated was c0000005 at address
636586B3 (<nosymbols>)

Here I have cut about 100 pages of Data

7548: 0d 0a ..
*********************************************************************
However I did see a Modem Audio Device, whatever that is, which is not installed
code 28. It does not seem that it wants to be installed. I have recently picked
up the updates for the motherboard and have installed all but the bios one that
scare me a bit - maybe I should have a read before even thinking of updating.

I have a Rockwell external 56KB modem which has worked as a Fax modem. However
when it is set to also receive the led's are bouncing all over the place as if
there is excessive noise on the phone line but it works very well for audio.
It sits there nice and quiet when I turn of the recieve.

1.) May be an incorrect setting in cmos setup or possibly some hardware
failure.

2.) That error means something that was installed does not play well with
the operating system. If you can't nail it down then usually a clean install
is required to cure it.

3.) Reinstalling the manufacturer's Windows 2000 driver might fix this.
