More on pop_ups

I have just installed iMesh. My excuse is that we have travel led a
great deal in the days when a film camera with sound cost a small
fortune. We did however take a standard 8 and later a super8. Both of
these cameras were without sound.

I therefore from time to time need some Tunisia (belly dancing) music
and or Jungle drums from Sierra Leone, Gambia or even some nature
sounds from Kenya and Tanzania - you look daft going to a shop with
such a purchase as they mostly only know what today passes for music.
iMesh and the like sites are perfect for picking up some strip of
suitable music to generate some family interest in our DVD's when we
have left this mortal coil.

Unfortunately, iMesh brought with it some pop ups which advertise and
invite casino gambling. I am about as interested in that as I am in
sport.

I have BlackIce as a firewall and use Hosts which are up to date to
avoid the intrusions that came with iMesh. I also have McAfee which is
updated automatically and I check that it never is any older than 8-10
days - I don't know what else I can do.

The pop up state they are an opportunity or invitation (I think they
called it) from Microsoft Internet. That program is installed and is
available in my taskbar but I generally use Netscape.

Short of switching either iMesh or my computer off - is there anything
I can do - PLEASE.

Have you tried running spybot on your PC?

I can only blame my age (81) on forgetting about spybot - it netted a
rich result.

I did set my BlackIce to paranoid and that helped. It can be set to 4
settings. Trusting, Cautious, Nervous and Paranoid. I had about 30
results from spybot. Therefore I have reset BlackIce back to Nervous.
I shall report what has happened.

Thanks for the help

OK so we are not finished. Adverts appeared again in the afternoon,
while the computer was burning a DVD. The machine was still as far as
I know free of rubbish, due to the spybot scan and BlackIce was still
set to paranoid. The trouble was that the computer now did not want to
make connection with my mailwasher or Eudora and would not allow me to
download new headers from freeserve.news.

I had suspicions about iMesh and found that I also had received
NewDotNet as a bonus. That was sitting in C:\Program Files in which I
never install a program.

There was a read me file in the new folder. Unfortunately I have lost
the content of that in the subsequent reboot. It was copied to a
Notepad file which had not been saved.
However it declared itself as being in connection with iMesh and
various advertising gimmicks and formerly connected with KaZaa.

I have uninstalled the NewDotNet and now back to 'nervous' with the
BlackIce settings.
I had to reboot which stole my thunder re. the content of the ReadMe
file - wish I could have copied it here.
I have tested iMesh and it seems to work after a while of stating that
page could not be found. Having acertained that, I have done a search
on NewDotNet and just found one shortcut from that.
It seems that I still have a working (limping) program without the
bother of the adverts - so BEWARE OF IMESH.

Sorry if I am boring anyone - as I was about to close, I saw this
picture advertising games like roulette, blackjack etc. Right clicked
on it and went for properties.

That told me that system32 had been invaded and a folder called
Roodey/cashe338 had been placed there.

I took a gamble and deleted the folder - now the picture dissapeared.
Let us see what happens tomorrow.
