Is it possible to stop Microsoft Oultook Express Identiy logon from appearing when I start Outlook 2

G

OK. I don't really see in there what applies to Microsoft Outlook 2003. Do
you think I should uncheck, "Use this identity when starting a program?" I
start lots of programs that don't do this. But I can try it. Thanks.

Outlook and Outlook Express are different programs. You'll get more

Well, considering OE is used for news (Outlook News Reader) and must be
installed before Outlook will work, I would say it does apply.

There is a newsgroup specifically for Outlook Express, in both its role as a
mail agent and its role as a news agent:
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6_outlookexpress
is for Outlook Express V6.

Really?

This is not an Outlook Express issue. Sorry to disappoint you. This is an Outlook 2003 issue. In other words if
Outlook 2003 was not installed, there would not be an issue. That makes it a Outlook 2003 issue.

If it's a newsreading issue, it's Outlook Express, not Outlook, since
Outlook can't read newsgroup.

OK I tried that. Gave it a few days to see if maybe it would just take some time rebooting and such. The only
way I can stop Microsoft Outlook 2003 from sending me the login prompt for the Identity in Outlook Express 5.5
when I fire it up is to have Microsoft Outlook Express open. Then I don't get it. Or to have at least opened it
once so that the identity is still current.

It might be something related to MAPI. That's where I'll be going next with this next. It turns out it was MAPI from SQL Server Agent that was preventing me from opening Outlook 2000 in a profile of my choice so maybe that issue has this behavior also. Thanks for the suggestion.

Outlook doesn't actually start if I say OK to the Identities prompt and type in the password. It just goes away. But this nag occurs every time I open Outlook 2003 if I have not logged into Outlook Express. Everytime.

If I remove the password requirement then...nothing happens I don't get the nag. Microsoft Outlook 2003 has hooked into Microsoft Outlook Express OR Microsoft Outlook Express has hooked into Microsoft Outlook 2003. Whichever it is Microsoft Oulook 2003 is not playing nice with Microsoft Outlook Express or Microsoft Outlook Express is not playing nice with Microsoft Outlook 2003.

But I can tell you this the issue does not occur with any other version of Microsoft Outlook.

I did transfer files from Microsoft Outlook Express to Microsoft Outlook 2003. Maybe there are messages from Microsoft Outlook Express in Microsoft Outlook 2003 that want to attach to Microsoft Outlook Express???

I'll have to test with a different pst...

Do you happen to have Outlook Express set as the default news program in
IE's Tools | Internet Options | Programs tab?

Yes and it is unavailable to change in Microsoft Outlook Express. I'll have to see if that is a Group Policy but I don't remember setting it. Can I tell Microsoft Outlook 2003 to leave my Newsreader alone?

G

No it's an opening Microsoft Outlook 2003 issue as my Subject explains. Thanks.

Yes, set OE as the default nes (from IE | Tools | Internet Optins | Programs
tab) and then don't use the Outlook News Reader link to open OE, use the
regular OE shortcut.

It is set to Outlook Express in IE Tools Programs. Which is all that is available.

Never have used the Outlook News reader. Didn't even know it existed. Heard something about it a long and farawy time ago but I've never seen the need to investigate it. I just open OE when I read newsgroups and Outlook when I read my e-mail. That's all I've ever done. But in this installation opening Outlook is causing the Identities query to fire from Outlook Express.

I need to find how newsgroups are configured in Outlook and shut it the hell off.

If you haven't run Outlook's "news reader" you shouldn't be shutting
anything off.

You have more than one Identitiy in OE? Password used?
Did you use Tom's ForceOE script to always ask for an Identity to start
with?

Set OE to use the one Identity in File | Manage Identites when starting and
see if that shuts it down.

You might want to try
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.outlook
or
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.outlook.General

The OP is already using the second of those groups.
