Outlook will no longer connect to our server after installing SP 2

All was fine until we installed SP 2. We are able to make Oultook Express
work using the same settings as we have for Outlook. We have tried all of
the obvious, "Repair" delete and re do e-mail account, remove and reinstall
Outlook, finally remove and and reinstall Office. Still the same problem,
and same error message. Any ideas?

Error message relates to the possibility that our server does not support
SSL. Have communicated with the provider, and had them check all of our
settings. They feel that all of our settings are correct?
Thank you.

What type of account are we talking about here?
Do you have a virusscanner that integrates with Outlook? Disable this
integration and try again.
Also check your firewall settings; disable it and see if it works now.

Hi Robert,

It is a POP 3 account.

OK, thanks, that worked. Fantastic. Will I need to leave the Norton
Security and AntiVirius off whenever I connect?

No you don't have to but this means that there is nothing wrong with your
Outlook configuration but with your Norton configuration.

I personally never have anti-virus products integrate with Outlook. It
doesn't add an extra level of protection as the on-access scanner will catch
a virus as well when you should accidentally open one.

Robert,

Thanks again. It seems that is not the NAV that is causing the problem, but
rather the firewall. At least, that is, I must disable my Norton Internet
Security(perhaps this is not actually the firewall?). I can leave the NAV
running, with no ill effects.
Not sure how to resolve this.

I was going to ask a further question, but figured it out. Thanks ever so
much. I had been stumped for a few days. Really, really appreciate it.

There should be a way for you to add Outlook to the firewall as a trusted
image.

Brian,

Thanks. I have not previously taken the time to really become familiar with
the firewall software. I will take your comment/suggestion and run with it.
Thanks very much.

I had the exact same problem and it took me three days to fix it! I also use
Outlook 2003 and Norton Internet Security 2005. I tried almost every
recommendation from both Microsoft and Symantec and here's what finally
worked for me:

Close Outlook
Open Norton Internet Security
Click on "Personal Firewall"
Click on "Turn Off"
Click on "Configure"
Click on "Programs" tab
Scroll down and highlight "Microsoft Outlook"
Click on "Remove"
Click on "Add"
Find and highlight Outlook.exe file. (Mine was located at c:\Program
Files\Microsoft Office\Office11)

Click "OK"
Click "Turn On"
Close Norton Internet Security
Open Outlook

Voila!! Mine works now!!!

I know how frustrating it is--hope this helps!
