IRC Freeware

I've been away from IRC for a long while and went looking for the old
freeware client I used to use - Mirc - only to find it isn't freeware
anymore (if in fact it ever was) what is the best alternative out there?

Yea;

I was going to try mIRC until I read the license. Good, popular product
but, it wasn't free (beer or speech).

I've tried HydraIRC and Mozilla's Chatzilla. Both were a little
daunting for this newbie. Recently, I've been trying GAIM. It's a
multi-platform, multi-protocol, open-sourced IRC/IM client. Versatile,
well-documented and pretty user-friendly. IMHO.

I'd especially recommend this for those who are working/playing in
Windoze *and* *nix environments.
