And your favourite IRC client is ...

I've tried a lot of IRC clients lately, but there isn't one that really
suits me. Some do lack "that precious feature" others clients do have, but
neither one seems to combine them all. mIRC comes close, to be honest --
but that's no freeware, and besides that, it looks horrible and really
needs a make-over after all those years. The last one I tried was HydraIRC
-- nice, but it's simply not finished yet.

The one I'm using now is Xchat, and Chatzilla is a good second. But I'm
still not satisfied. :)

So ... what are your favourite IRC clients -- and why?

Xchat is the only one.
I tried Miranda IM' IRC plugin, but it lacked essential features like file
send/receive.

I think mIRC is still the best (because of the scripting stuff) but it's not
freeware. :/

I like xchat and Visual IRC.

Miranda has a different take on IRC, as it holds IRC users like instant
messenger contacts, so you can start private converstions when they are
online. I use this whenever I want to get in touch with people and I do not
have their instant messenger contacts.

I am playing with Miranda some, can't quite get used to its interface.
FWIW, Trillian also will display IRC contacts just as IM contacts, and
will allow hostmasking in case someone uses a nick also used by others.
There are several quirky things about Trillian that I don't like, so I
play around with others sometimes, but so far I keep going back to
Trillian. On the upside, Trillian finally stopped nagging me to buy
it; I don't know if this was because of upgrading to a more recent
version, or if the nagger just eventually gave up on me.

I have tried all the main multi-network IM clients, and I am very happy
with Miranda. It does everything I need it to, except that I can't get it
to tell me whenever a particular friend comes online.

I don't think it will announce if the friend is set to invisible, even
if the friend is visible to you. It is annoying.

I don't use IRC - can't get used to it. I'll stay with my IM...
But I tried many (All free and all windows):

XiRCON - http://www.xircon.com/
The best! I really liked it, but ist's old now and discontinued.

HydraIRC - http://www.hydrairc.com/
A newcomer. Nice.

Miranda - http://www.miranda-im.org/
Yeah, hard to get used to. Many bad plugins. But still my choice for IM.

XChat - http://xchat.org/index.html.gz
Unix IRC client with windows port.

Bersirc - http://bersirc.free2code.net/
Has a new owner now...

Visual IRC - http://www.visualirc.net/
A good one.

TinyIRC - http://www.tinyirc.net/
Tries to be small and not feature rich. And it's good at it.

Have fun trying them all!

If you need more to play around with:
http://www.ircreviews.org/clients/platforms-windows.html

As stated above I liked XiRCON, but it was old at the time I tried it and
it's older now... anyone else here who used that little gem?

Greetings

Miranda IM's IRC plugin supports hostmasks too.

I worked out how to do it. I tried a new plugin called Tooltip Notify that
did it with no fuss. Avoid the NewStatusNotify / Popup combination that is
normally recommended. It's much more complicated and did not work for me.

Miranda is now perfect.)

I am using:

smileyadd.dll
historypp.dll
srmm.dll
AIM.dll
IRC.dll
jabber.dll
msn.dll
import.dll
ttnotify.dll

Thanks for that

The typing notify plugin is funny, it tells you when somebody is typing a
message to you, so you can send them a 'yes?' or something similar before
they finish their message.
