freeware Chat application (unix/linux)

Hi:

Not sure if this is the best plaece to ask this.. But it is a freeware app
qustion..

I was looking at a ver nice chat application that charges a monthly fee..
this app has a very slick looking interface. Yet it is pay per use..

I was wondering if there is any freeware Chat Programs (to run on a Linux
Server)?

If possible, I am looking for a non HTML/refresh the page every 5 seconds to
'update' the messages.. I'd like an app to run through a browser (so others
don't have to fight with IRC clients, etc)..

Any Suggestions greatly appreaciated.
