IPod/iTunes Error Message

Each time I try to download my iTunes/iPod I end up getting this error message:

1608: Unable to create InstallDriver instance = Return code 12147024894

As a short background, this Dell computer is 8 weeks old. The error message
originates from Install Shield. After well over 10 calls to Dell and 3 to
Apple, NO ONE can help me. Apple says its a Windows problem; Dell evnetually
either blames Apple or wants me to reformat the computer (which has been done
ONCE already and its brand new)! I am frustated and at my wits end. I
have gone to and followed the Install Shield website steps for this error and
Dell has also done this. Matters not - the message eventually returns.

Can someone help? I just cannot believe in this day and age Microsoft makes
software that is incompatible with an iPod which millions of people own.

Thank you John, but believe me, I have tried the steps listed on the
InstallShield site. In fact, a Dell tech took over my computer via internet
and did the same steps and still the same message. They eventually told me I
have to reformat the brand new computer (which has been done once already).
They out and out refuse to send a technician or take the computer back even
though its less than 3 months old.

Patti~~ I have heard others say that the software is, indeed, not compatible
with the Ipod. Many of my students tell me that they had to purchase
additional software in order to get their songs from their computers to their
Ipods. Personally, I have been looking for an Ipod, but after hearing the
incompatibility issues, I am now looking at the Sandisk MP3 players. They are
said to be compatible with all computers and software. Sorry for the lack of
good news :(

Frankly, I love my iPod! Apple could not have been more patient with me
even though the problem is very defiinitely the Install Shield software.
They have not suggested any extra software to help, and my frustation really
lies with Dell. This is the second problem I have had with the new computer,
and they end up telling me to reformat the hard drive. The computer is at
best 8 weeks old and has been reformatted once already.

I shy away from purchasing something else for my music simply because I am
afraid I will run into this install problem again. As it is now, I have an
expensive iPod that is of no use to me and a computer that, quite frankly, is
a huge disappointment for the size of the corporation.
