IP networking fails after SP2 install

Issue: Network card cannot obtain an IP address. Status
is "Limited or no connectivity."

IPCONFIG /release & /renew does not fix the issue.
Attemting to "Repair" the connection also does nothing.

Replacing the network card (tried 2 intel and one 3com)
does nothing. It's not simply a driver issue.

Uninstalling SP2 makes everything work again.
Reinstalling SP2 breaks it again.

Manually setting the IP/subnet/gateway/etc doesn't work
either.

I've seen lots of people in the newsgroups with this
issue... it's an SP2 issue. It'd be nice to know if there
is an easy fix.

This is the worst thing that could happen. The user had
the update automatically installed by Windows Update and
then the update makes it so the computer can't get back
online. Nice bug.

did you disable the built in firewall (again) SP2 automatically turns it
on...

Are you connected to a router or a cable modem? If so, unplug the cable
modem for about 5 minutes and try again. If connected to one of those
consumesr routers, try rebooting the router. Hope it helps.
