why only can surf using static ip address

My xp sp2(just converted to sp2) is connected to the router by ethernet
cable. I just dont be able to get access to internet if I set TCP/IP-obtain
IP address automatic and Obtain DNS server automatically. It will show "page
cannot be displayed."

The bottom rght lan icon will always show acquiring network address. The
same situation exist if I insert another NIC.(drivers installed) But if I
copy the details ip address/gateway etc from another pc which is connected to
the same router (by cable too) then I can surf.

When I try to repair it, it gives a message that "Windows could not finish
repairing the problem because the following action cannot be completed.'
Renewing your ip address' "

Pc just scanned with housecall and only I trojan generic and minor
cookies.Please advice what can I do? thanks

Log on to your router and set it to be a "DHCP server". What model
router?

Did you say Trojan? That PC needs cleaning. Google for Trojan removal
instructions - do that first!
