This is Windows XP Pro running on a notebook PC. IP
crashes when I add a NIC (I have used several different
ones in the past, but now it crashes regardless of which
one I add. Once it crashes, it affects ALL IP
connectivity, even for other my internal NIC.
After the crash:
Ping by LAN IP address says "Pinging >" (leaves out the IP
address.
"Ping statistics for..." shows odd characters in place of
IP address also. The reply itself shows the correct IP
address.
Pinging anything outside LAN fails - "unable to locate
host".
DHCP client generates message, "An operation was attempted
on something that was not a socket."
Already tried reboot, change from dynamic to static, and
net shell IP repair utility ("netsh int ip reset"). None
worked.
I have had to run System Restore several times to get IP
back again, but it continues to crash each time I try to
reinstall the NIC.
