Yes, right...

I am barely old enough to remember this stuff. However, I wrote software
that supports these old-fashioned emulations, so I have to know a little
about it. Mostly, I just took escape sequences out of an old version of the
same software that was written for MS-DOS in the '70s and '80s ;)

Replaced the four ink cartridges (total cost $75) Sunday, and from
that point on, the printer only prints blank pages. When I send print
matter to the printer, it acts as if its printing but no ink appears on
the pages. Have verified that printer is getting USB1 signals from
PC (Win XP Home SP2) and that ink cartridges are well-seated.
They install with a positive, audible click. Even removed and reseated
all four ink cartridges. No change. Still prints blank pages.

It's been clogged.
First of all, take out all cartridges, shake them like 15 - 20 times
and install them back.
Do the head cleanings twice, give it like 20 mins break, then print the
following page:

Epson then suggested I replace my four ink cartridges--the very ones
I installed yesterday at a cost of $75. (No skin off Epson's back,
right?) So, I wonder if new cartridges (another $75) will print.
What if they don't? I'm out another $75 bucks and may still
be printing blank pages. I'm not prepared to cope with this scenario.

OK, if you cannot remove the clogs, try to buy some cleaning kit or you
can buy a new printer CX4800.

Epson CX4800 and CX4600 are using the different chipset/cartridges,
they are not compatiable.

Epson's chipset is designed to run head cleaning automatically whenever
you turn on printer, this would consume 2-3ml ink, which is almost 15%
of cartridge's capacity.

If you want to get rid of the expensive Epson cartridge, you can try to
use a very decent ink system like:

Reviews of bulk ink system:

This ink system has great chipset which can reduce head cleanings.
